Hi -

Next year my daughter will be required to take the Stanford 10 Achievement Test. She will be in second grade. I am wondering about the science and social studies section on the test. I usually use Apologia and/or NOEO for science and STOW for history. In order for her to do well on the test, do I need to consider something more traditional for those subjects? I am just concerned that the questions will focus on an area we haven't covered during the year. For example, this year we focused only on Biology. For history, we mainly focused on Ancient History.

Any advice or information you can give will be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it for a nanosecond, not for science and social studies. Do whatever you think is best for your dc.

:iagree:with Ellie. My oldest took the Iowa Basic in 2nd grade. She was a voarcious reader at that time, easily reading middle school readers. She got a ridiculously low score in Social Studies because she didn't know what a "ranch" was and there weren't very many questions in that area- we lived in Los Angeles at the time.:001_smile:
otoh, I haven't really spent much time formally teaching sicence to my kids in elementary years and they all always score in the upper 90% on science.

My ds missed a 3rd grade social studies about the location of "suburbs." He answered "under the ground" (it was one of the choices on the multiple choice ITBS), b/c he knew from Latin that "sub" meant "under/underneath!"
Bless his heart! The very next week he learned "urbs/urbis" as a Latin noun! That really made him mad!

I only focused on English/Math scores when we had to take the full battery of tests.
