As a bit of background information, my DD (age 5) has been working through Abeka phonics this year. Things were going pretty well until their "if the word has 2 vowels, the first vowel is long and the second is silent" rule came into play.

Now, my DD can totally do the "marking the vowels" etc...but she is still struggling when she is reading the words.

Long story short, we took a step back and started doing ETC 2 with her. That is seeming to work really well with Nora Gaydos readers. I think she really needed more short vowel practice with consonant blends before moving on to the long vowels. Once we start the long vowels, I would rather go at a slower pace...such as just learning silent e first and moving onto the other blends from there.

So...is there a good (and hopefully cheap) program that mostly lines up with ETC. A little bit of different order is fine, but something close would be excellent.

I have always used AlphaPhonics in conjunction with ETC and so far 4:4 excellent readers with another on her way. I have found that when ETC is difficult (book 4 -syllablcation), AllphaPhonics tends to be a bit easier and vice versa. AlphaPhonics does a great job of doing the double vowel concept because there is so much repitition and practice for each concept vowel set/ each concept
Not sure about readers. We've just always jumped from the AlphaPhonics/ETC combo rigth into 3rd grade readers.

When Sonlight first came out with their I Can Read It books, they were coordinated with the ETC workbooks. The ICRI books started with short, vowels, then blends, then e on the end. I believe it stopped just at the 2 vowels. They then had a short reader called Lots of Pets that was just short vowels and blends. Then they went into Dr. Seus type books. You might check them out.

The Primary Phonics Readers (http://www.epsbooks.com/dynamic/catalog/series.asp?seriesonly=2381M) are published by the same company that does ETC. They Have 6 sets and each set has 10 books in it. They also have their own workbooks but I preferred ETC and just pulling the readers to go along with what we were working on that week. I even bought all 6 sets before I realized I could get them a library in the next town! :001_huh: They were a great resource for my oldest and I'll be pulling them out again for #2 next year!

I use ETC with OPG and the Nora Gaydos readers you mentioned in your post - it has worked really well for us. We also have Bob books but we don't use those as much.
