I've picked up several old Spanish textbooks. Some of them are fantastic, and I'm using them for my own self-education. I may use them as supplements for my son.
However, I've come across information about spelling changes to Spanish that we should keep in mind if we use old textbooks. This website (http://faculty.weber.edu/tmathews/grammar/marks.html) has the best explanation that I've found. Basically, they dropped the accent marks in one-syllable words, except for a short list of exceptions. These few words have different meanings if they're accented.
This includes Madrigal's Key to Spanish, but Madrigal is such an incomplete grammar book that it shouldn't be used as a sole textbook anyway. I still like Madrigal as an introduction.
