Has anyone compared the writing of these two programs? I am thinking ahead for when my dd will be in third grade.

I have used both of them. I was overwhelmed by CQLA and didn't make it far in the book.
I LOVE Writing Tales. It is easy to use, has lots of grammar review/instruction, and best of all, my son enjoys it.

You're welcome. I don't feel I gave much of a CQLA review though. It reminds me of TOG for Language. It covers a wide variety of topics, but it was just to much for me. My dd enjoyed it, but I found I kept putting if off because it was a curr. I didn't like to use. And I had all the teacher helps, video, tapes, etc.
I am sure if you do a search on the old WTM boards for CQLA you will find some very helpful reviews. I know some folks here use it and are enjoying it. It just depends on your teaching style.
Hope you find what works for you!

I have the student edition of CQLA. I just have heard so many good things about Writing Tales that I was wondering what the differences the two programs were.

In short, WT is much easier to use.
You still using the same idea's to re-write the story in your own words as you do with CQLA. There is also vocab & spelling in WT, like there is with CQLA. You have to go back and look for words in the story and circle them and those types of activities as in CQLA. There is just more in CQLA than WT. The amount in WT is perfect for me and my son.
They are similar, but different. I don't know exactly how to explain it. CQLA is more in depth, or extra busy work depending on how you look at it.
So far with WT1, we haven't done an outline. But I am sure that is coming down the road, or in WT2.
I like the suggested games. I LOVE the co-op lesson plans. Makes me want to teach a WT class at co-op. :D
Hope that helped you a little more than before. I wish another user of both would see this and reply.:)
