Just curious after the "taking more college classes thread." I have no desire to go back to college, even though it would be easy to do since we live in a college town. Graduated public high school in 93, got married summer of 95, I graduated from Purdue in 97' with a BS in management (emphasis in Rest. & institution food service) So what is your educational background?

B.S. in Psychology / Music; M.D.; residency in Family Practice; (got married in this space); fellowship in medical editing/faculty development; (had child here at the end of studies; always thought that it would be v. difficult to get married and/or have children in the midst of studies - hats off to those who do!)

I'm working on my master's in "Mothering."
Really, I graduated from high school in 82. My senior year was outsourced to the local community college. So I have one year of college experience but 25 years later, only half of it counts as transfer credits. After being a sahm forever, I am starting school again. Currently it is just enrichment, but it may develop into something else later.

And I would LOVE to have time to take classes at a local college. I happily take classes the rest of my life. I actually have a seminary about a mile away from me and have considered auditing classes when I have a little more flexibility with the kids.

Northwestern only allowed five years post-comps to turn in a dissertation - somehow twins (one with autism) kinda took over and seemed more important than writing about The Image of Woman in the Hollywood BioPic. Still does, too.
But knowing how to do research has proven useful - I just never imagined I'd be research autism and lksv!
BTW - my mom post-kids went to school and got her BA just a few years ago. Granny graduated!

I have a BS in education (somehow that seems fitting...). I have to take 6 hours every five years to keep my teaching license. Our local college was dropping their Master's program 20 years ago, so I needed to decide: Master's or another child. She'll be 20 this spring... :D And then we had 3 more.

I have a BS in Wildlife Management (both kinds :D). After an internship with the US Forestry Service the summer before my senior year, I knew that wasn't for me. Too much red tape and **ses running the show. My dad convinced me to finish my degree, which I did. I now have a piece of paper that looks all nice and pretty ;)
For the record, dh does not have a university degree and has done very well for himself in the computer software field (linux). He sometimes wishes he could go back to school but since all of his credits are from a British university, they would not transfer very well here (and he would have to take 2 years of silly classes). He is going into management anyways ;)
So the one with the degree stays at home and teaches the kiddos and the one without the degree brings home the bacon.

I was applying to law school when I met dh and ditched it in favor of getting married. Later, I was accepted to seminary where my dh is a student, but never had time and money at the same time. I looked into online or correspondence MS - Accounting programs, but then I had a 3rd child instead. When she was a year old, I began homeschooling my older 2 while still working outside the home, so going back to school in any form is just not doable. I will be 55 yo when my youngest is 18, and I think by then I'll be too old and tired to care about going back to school. :(

I guess I'm pretty guilty of being interested in continuing education, until children, that is. Once I've gotten them off to college, I'll probably go back and do more coursework, myself.....
I have a BA in Physical Anthropology (that's forensics work, among other things). There was no BS available in it back when I went to school in the dinosaur days, LOL..... I have an official minor in psychology as I was interested in doing profiling work at the time. I began masters level work but dropped out due to personal and family problems I was experiencing at the time....
I started coursework for a second degree in business (accounting), but it got sidetracked when I moved to Louisiana. I have various certifications from Tulane's business institute related to managerial work I did when I lived down there.
I obtained paralegal certification from LSU in anticipation of attending law school. I was admitted to LSU law school for the school year following my testing year, but finally got pregnant before my admission date, and so didn't end up going.....
I would still like to go back to school and work towards my phd in some area of forensics work and/or obtain CFI designation (certified fraud investigator, which is an accounting designation).
I'm also getting interested in theology studies at this time in my life, and have a pretty good seminary nearby, so I might start work in that area, instead!

I graduated from high school in '80, but didn't get my degree in secondary education until '87. I did get in some graduate hours before I landed a job teaching middle school. I taught for 5 years before my first was born.

I'm also a dedicated autodidact, though, and suspect I have learned more since graduating than I did in college.
Which is not to say I don't want to go back to school. Actually, it's at the top of my priorities list once I'm obsolete in my current job as homeschooling mom.

a BA in psychology and a minor in French. I would have had a double major, but I did not want to continue. While I was working, I started to take some graduate school work. I could not do it. So, I just graduated from college, but I plan to go back and take other courses just want my children established in the basics first.

I didn't even finish high school, completed year 10 , did really well. was strongly discouraged from continuing by all my family and church.
one of the reasons I am doing WTM is to make sure that my children have a good education. though I am finding the thought of teaching rhetoric a little daunting.

You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but why did your family and church discourage you from finishing school? I'm just curious. You can PM me if you don't want to answer here... or just not answer. I was just curious. :o

Did a bunch of years in broadcasting and advertising. Got another BA in English-Secondary Ed. Spent a few years teaching. Had DD and been a SAHM ever since. If you had told me ten years ago that I would be a Homeschooling SAHM, I would have run away screaming. Now my kids see me running towards them................ sometimes screaming.;)
DH has a BA in Anthropology, did a bunch of years on the Mercantile Exchange trading floor jumping up and down yelling, went back for a BA in Secondary Ed-English and has been teaching for almost 15 years in a CPS high school.

I was a vocational student, so I have no languages, only 1 year of higher math, 1 year of higher science. I did take 2 years of typing, 2 years of shorthand, and a year of office business machines. Those skills have come in useful (ok, not the shorthand itself, lol, but the business writing that I did as part of it) over the years.

BS in Mathematics and a minor in Spanish. I worked as a computer analyst before staying home with kids. Now, all the jobs in my field are in India. At one time, I was interested in going back to school to become a midwife, but that ship has sailed. When my youngest approaches college, I will decide what I want to do with the rest of my life. Teaching my kids (or should I say "facilitating their learning") has sparked the desire to go back to school just for the joy of learning. But, I can't say what that would be. Linguistics? History? who knows?

Just curious after the "taking more college classes thread." I have no desire to go back to college, even though it would be easy to do since we live in a college town. Graduated public high school in 93, got married summer of 95, I graduated from Purdue in 97' with a BS in management (emphasis in Rest. & institution food service) So what is your educational background?
Kristine
I graduated high school, worked, took a few courses through an international missions organization, worked and traveled with the organization for a few years, got married, had kids. Never thought I'd be a homeschooler - when I was in high school, I went to a church where most families homeschooled and I couldn't imagine teaching my kids at home. Now I couldn't imagine doing anything else right now. I LOVE LOVE LOVE crafting and weaving together an education for each of my kids, and LOVE all the stuff I'm learning through this process. I've discovered that learning is engaging and fun! Maybe someday I'll take some university courses, but as back in high school, I don't know what to take. So we'll see.

BS in Nursing. I'm now an unemployed RN. :) I always feel like I have nursing as a great back up in case I would need to work again.
Ditto this for me. My background is critical care nursing and I miss it at times. But, a few years back I realized that, though I was only working 4 hours/week (enough to keep my license current), the continuing education alone required to work in that arena kept me spread thinner than what was healthy for me if I wanted to do justice to our homeschooling. So, I left bedside nursing. Since then, I've creatively served as camp nurse at our church's kids's camp and the like (volunteer hours) which have applied toward our state's licensure requirements. Worst case, if I should let my license go inactive, I'd just have to take a refresher course to plug back in. For now, I'm most content to serve my girls here at home. ;-)

I did not know you could get a degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling. Actually, I am sitting here now thinking I am not sure what that means. Do you care for pastors or are you a pastor caring for other people? I am actually curious and not in any way trying to be a smart-alek. Really I am not. Anyway, either way, I think it could be a very important degree.

This kind of degree gives you the ability to provide counseling services to people in need, but usually it is done in a church. So, if you needed counselling, you can go to a pastor who has this specialty to their degree. It is wonderful to have a pastor who offers this type of service because you don't have to go to someone outside of your church.
Hope that helps.
Blessings,
Karen

Dropped out of high school two months before graduation. Attended community college while bartending and waitressing then dropped out of college. I am now a junior at a local state university. I have been able to take all my classes online and will graduate at the end of next spring. I will then go on and finish graduate school. I owe all of my motivation to home schooling, TWTM, and this board. I am blessed.

Finished my degree in English, got certified as a secondary English teacher. I'm glad I got a degree, but the specifics of my degree/certification hold no practical application to what I do as a homeschooler. I consider it something to fall back on if I ever need it. People seem to "feel" better about the fact that I homeschool when they learn I'm a certified teacher. I'm always quick to tell them that being a certified teacher has absolutely no bearing on how well you can educate your own kids.

Don't you just love the diversity of homeschoolers? I have a BA in psychology, I left law school at the end of the second week to get a MA in counseling, and then I was planning to go back and finish, (I wanted to be a family mediator) but our first son "accompanied me" (in utero:)) across the stage to get my degree, and we've been together every day since...
I can truly say that I use my education every day. The only down side is that, once in awhile, I'll want to go to a workshop or something at church about marriage, and my husband will say, "I live with a marriage counselor. That's enough." ;)

BA in Psychobiology (yes, I wish they would have changed the name of that major, LOL - it was like a light double major in psych and biology), then MA in speech-language pathology. B.S. in Education (elementary education).....I graduated nearly 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. I ended up never teaching outside of the home. I had no idea what I was doing when I was thrown to student teaching in college!
