View Full Version : Is it O.K. to start latin with ds when he turns 10?

I decided to concentrate on getting ds9 to start speaking Spanish this year since it is my first language and I am fluent. DS understands a lot of Spanish and can translate whole stories from Spanish to English but he cannot speak it well (at all!). I understand the benefits of studying Latin but if I want to get him speaking Spanish by the end of this year we need to focus quite a bit of time and energy in that direction everyday. We are doing Bible, math, writing, grammar, spelling and spanish daily this year and history and science twice a week. I feel like adding Latin on top of all that would be too much. Is it o.k. to start Latin when he is 10. Is there a specific reason (greater benefit) for a child to learn Latin while they are young versus a bit older?
Thanks!
Becky

I think what you're doing sounds great! I don't remember off hand whether it was in WTM or LCC (or both) that I saw it recommended to do exactly what you're doing. (i.e. teach your native language if you speak one while the dc are young and can pick up the native accent.)

We started Latin at 10 for my son, it has worked out great. I had four years of Spanish in high school (years ago) and I think you'll see a nice benefit at knowing Spanish and English as you teach Latin. There is so many Latin words I knew because of the Spanish that I barely remember.

Actually, your ds will probably have an advantage in learning Latin after learning some Spanish! Kids at the age of 10 are still capable of memorizing so much vocabulary and all the Latin endings. I've never heard of Getting Started with Latin. What are the features of this program? I really like The Great Latin Adventure by Katharine Birkett and all of my kids did really well with this program.

I'd always recommend getting a living language going first, while children are less self conscious. Ten is a fine age to start Latin.

Your plan sounds good to me.

My third son did not start Latin until this year (he's 10 now) and has done great with it.

I am so thankful for you responses. Now I feel much better about postponing Latin for another year! Thanks again.....:001_smile:
