Is this only done as a supplement? It seems many are using it that way. Is it not meant to be a stand alone program? Or is it just not meaty enough to stand alone? thanks.

It is really meant to stand alone. The author claims it is definitely enough. But for nervous mothers like me----I use it as a supplement to make sure all the bases are covered. ;)

I'm using it as stand alone with Beginning algebra with my 7th grader. Since it is relatively new, I think many are concerned about how students will perform on standardized tests (ACT, SATs) for college entrance. In my case, my son is still young enough to have him do another algebra program if it appears he hasn't had enough practice or is missing something (not that I anticipate that though).

Me, too.

I like to quote Kathy in MD in this thread (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34090&highlight=life+fred+serious):
Added: I think some will be reluctant to use it as a stand alone program until it has more of a track record on these boards, because something so fun shouldn't be so good. OTOH, some may be forseeing trying to explain to the admission officer at MIT that a book titled Life of Fred IS a serious calculus text.

I believe I would refer the admissions officer to this (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/science_math_resources.html) where the College Board recommends LOF Calculus to prepare for the CLEP test in that subject.

I'm using it as a standalone for Trig. My rocket scientist husband says it covers things. It explains it well enough that my son only occasionally needs extra help. BUT, if my husband couldn't help, we'd have a real problem, because there are answers provided to everything in the Home Companion, but not worked out solutions.
