I need advice what to do with my ds the next 2 years in history. We did MOH this year together; however, I felt that it was above his head and not a good fit for her. The main way to make it more challenging for her age was research, research, research. I do want her to do some, but not every lesson. She has done quite a bit of historical reading as a supplement and will continue that always. I am switching her back to BJU World History for 7th grade. She'll be covering 1100 AD to the present. She'll do American History in 8th.

What should I do with him? The age difference has been very challenging for me. Should I try to pick topics from her study in which to include him, giving him an overview of history in these 3 years? I guess I'd have to get library books and pull it together myself unless someone knows of a curriculum that would help me out. BTW, her dad is a history teacher. This summer he's going to cover where our MOH leaves off and her BJU picks up.

Greetings,

I also have a bit of an age difference. My oldest ds is 11, and the next ds is 6, and finally the last ds is 4. I use Tapestry because it stretches from 1st grade to 12th grade.

At the younger age we do interesting reading -- if it's not interesting, he won't sit through it. So it's almost all fun picture books that cover the same topic as the big brother. Tapestry provides the reading for each level (Lower Grammar, Upper Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric).

You could probably pick up a used TOG manual (classic is the older version) that matches the time frame you're studying with your older student. (Probably could find it on the WTM For Sale board.) Then you would have a list of books for your younger child without so much research on your own. Tapestry will also give activity ideas, as well as a wealth of other information.

So... that's one idea!

and you should take this with a HUGE grain of salt as I only have one ds, so I don't know "nuthin' 'bout" schooling children together.

I think that is really tough, b/c I imagine that the BJU book covers more topics than Western Civ. SOTW might be your best bet just choosing chapters that line up with your older dc's topics. Or maybe the Diana Waring year two workbook that accompanies her materials? I am really not sure what to suggest for next year for you. As young as he is, I might be inclined to mostly do projects that line up. However, AFTER that when your dd does American History, I would use the Truth Quest guide for youngers that covers American History. I have heard great things about that program. I think having them do American History together will be much easier.

Sorry I am not much help. :o( Hope you find something.
