I had this all planned out when I was pregnant.
Now I've got new baby sleep deprived brain fog.

so help me out.

I had planned to register for the ACT and SAT in may for the test in June 09. (get that practice under the belt, kwim?)

In what grade do your kids take SATsub or AP:
US history
World History
english lit and comp

how did you prep them for it?

I'm needing to know what to plan for 9th grade, which is just next year for us!

Register farther in advance if possible - we waited until a month before and the local school was FULL and we had to drive much farther for ds to take the ACT.

Also note World History SATII not offered every time - we JUST MISSED having ds take it in Dec. We ASSUMED it was offered more often. Well, may just use his AP score on that one ;)

DS is SATII-ing his AP classes so as to have some SAT II scores for colleges that want them.

Here (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66245) was one discussion on general testing.

It is the rare 9th grader who takes an AP course or does SAT-II subject testing. You can always borrow some prep books from the library to see if this is something for which your student wishes to aim.

Personally, I would not have my 8th grader take both the ACT and SAT for practice. My advice would be to look at the SAT writing prompts to see if your student is comfortable with them. If not, you might consider the ACT (without writing) as a baseline. (My son began taking the ACT in 9th to fulfill my state's requirement for an annual test.)

Now give that baby a kiss from all of us.

Also, if you are just interested in establishing a baseline, check around to see if anyone offers a practice test. My oldest took a practice SAT with Princeton review (along with an analysis) and at the community college (along with an analysis). The PSAT can also be a good indicator of where your child is without establishing an official SAT score. The PSAT is offered once a year, usually in October, and can be taken in 9th grade, but *counts* in 11th grade.

And if you can't find someone who does this locally, you might do what we've done. Simply mimic the test conditions as well as possible and do it at home. I had my daughter do this with both the SAT and ACT to determine which one suited her better.
