Has anyone used this program successfully? Is it scripted and easy to teach?

Mary Pecci, right?

My library had that book. I remember reading the book when my oldest was 4 or 5 y.o. (She's 13 now.) I wasn't able to use it except for helps and hints while using a more structured program. Put it back on the shelf after one check out.

Hope someone who used it differently can be more helpful. So at least I'll bump this up for you.

I found this at my library about 10 years ago and devoured it. I then started using it with my daughter who was 7 and having a hard time learning to read. I used it with the Pathway readers, which is what she suggested at that time. The book itself was not scripted. I purchased the list she sold of how to introduce all the words in the 1st grade Pathway readers. That was totally scripted and very helpful. I am now using this with my ds. I'm using it with some older Ginn readers this time because they're colorful. I don't feel I need the script this time around.

I would describe this as more of a vertical phonics approach. She has the child learn the long and short sound of the vowels, the consonant sounds, and 5 basic consonant digraphs before the child begins reading anything. Then the words are introduced in the context of a sentence so the child can apply the phonics clues he already knows. Vowel digraphs are taught as they are encountered in the readers. The 2nd stage is short vowel families. Then magic E and 2 vowel words.

The author is now writing her own readers to go along with this program, so I don't think she offers the word list for the Pathway readers anymore.
There used to be some nice samples at her website. HTH Let me know if you anymore questions.

Quite a few years ago, when my 20 year old was very young, I had that book.
The workbooks you can get that were made by the same author are wonderful. My son thought he was just playing when he did the activities in the workbooks and really enjoyed and wanted to do them.
But I cannot comment on the book because it has been so long since I have seen it.

This program worked very successfully about 6 years ago for a dear friend whose son was a bit delayed in getting phonics and learning to read -- and the matching workbooks are great, introducing very basic and grammar with very clever activities, minimal writing, and a very fun, gentle, homemade (in the best sense of the word) look to them. See them at her website: http://www.onlinereadingteacher.com/

While we didn't use the program, we DID use a lot of the big, thick (well over 300 pages) supplemental workbook called Super Seatwork Word Skills (still available through Rainbow Resource: http://rainbowresource.com/product/Word+Skills/003946/1235864111-1440683) -- GREAT worksheets on contractions, syllables, adding prefixes, suffixes and endings -- even sections on alphabetizing and dictionary skills! VERY worthwhile for grades 2-5!!

BEST of luck, whatever you go with! Warmly, Lori D.
