Check the yellow pages of your phone book for adoption agencies in your area. Call each one. They will give you information about their orientation meetings. Go to all of them, if you can, before choosing one to work with.

Also, Google "adoption agency" your-state and you will likely pull up at least one website that lists all the agencies in your state. Typically you work with an adoption agency to fill out paperwork (tons) and have a home study done (social worker comes to your house, interviews everyone in your family, and writes up a description).

I would encourage you to read the book "Adoption Nation" by Adam Pertman. Your library probably has it. It is a really good, easy to read book that discusses adoption in all its forms - private, public, special needs, domestic, international, etc. It also has a great list at the end called adoption resources.

Each path to adoption has its benefits and drawbacks. I think it is important to learn about these different paths so you can make the choice that works for YOUR family.

I would be happy to discuss our family's journey with you if you are interested.
