You might try:

Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett
The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (I might preview this one first)
Holes by Louis Sachar (preview first; probably needs editing as a read-aloud, but very good story)
From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
The House of Dies Drear by Virginia Hamilton
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
The Shakespeare Stealer by Gary Blackwood

But the most similar book, IMO, would be Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None! Great mystery read and I think it would be OK to read aloud, depending on your dc's ages and editing if you must. :)
