Do you use a history program that makes you look forward to what you and your children are going to learn and discover each new day?

If so, please share!!!

I am SO GLAD to have that curriculum available. It is perfect for us.

The writing is very engaging. It gives some context for US history that I never got until college. It gives me great suggestions for additional reading, and the freedom to do as much or as little extra as I choose, without a huge initial invetment.

Carol, do you use the activity guide? What age can you use it up to?

SOTW!! I love it, the kids love it! Definitely get the activity book. We are in our third year and I've never thought about switching curriculum for history. Now as far as math, spelling, writing........:tongue_smilie:

I am intrigued by Sonlight but have decided to continue with SOTW 3 for next year, bringing in my dd5 starting now to get her familiar with the maps and the stories. We love listening to SOTW and reading many of the extra book suggestions, some we buy and many we get from the library. We always do the mapwork and the narration and many weeks we also do a hands-on project. Overall it's been a favorite in our homeschool, they still ask to listen to old stories from other SOTW CD's and many of the extra book suggestions have turned into favorites in our house. I also like that I can spend as little or as much on books as I choose at the time, not all at one shot.

SOTW!! I love it, the kids love it! Definitely get the activity book.

:iagree: We loved SOTW for grammar stage. I only wish there was a logic stage equivalent...

Definitely SOTW. Engaging writing, lots of nifty detail, great activities and lots of extra book suggestions. I also like the continual map work. My kids also love SOTW.

Honestly, once I get the current year well underway, I start chomping at the bit to plan the next year. I just love sourcing and selecting books and materials and fitting it all together. Every year, I'm convinced I've put together the best program yet.

I can't imagine anything I could buy off the shelf that would be that much fun!

Sonlight. This is our first year, and I love it. I read the 27 reasons every year and went back and forth over it, and every year until now, I went with something else. I was finally able to find the IG I wanted used, and I figured $20 was worth it to give it a spin. I am hooked, and my two younger DDs love it.

I also really like History Odyssey, but it gets a mixed review from DD.

TWTM! We love it and we are learning so much! I just planned out next year and I am so excited to teach it! I talked to the kids about what we would be learning and some of the books we will be reading and they said, "That sounds like it will be as much fun as this year!"

Can't say enough good things about TWTM.

MFW, because it is fun for the kiddos and easy for me to implement, so I know it's going to get done. I also love the biblical intergration.

Loving History Odyssey! I can add to it with my own resources and books, but without me adding anything it is fun and engaging!

LOVE the books recommended by Beautiful Feet. Don't always do the suggested activities...often we just do narrations and our own notebook pages, but the read a louds are WONDERFUL!!!!!

I also have SOTW 2...haven't used it yet w/ my kids, but I have read it to myself and thought it was great! I didn't the first due to the amount of mythology I heard was in it, but I will be checking into vol. 3 and 4.

SOTW with the AG--Next year I will add in some extra books from the Sonlight and WP lists. I just got the AG to peruse from ILL, so I have to return it soon--I can't wait to see what the AG book rec's are.

Another Sonlight here! I really think it's the living books though. I know I could do it without the IG, but I don't want to:D. I love the open and go simplicity, and I love the book choices.

I'm excited to do HOD with my youngest next year. I think it's going to be perfect for her.

Biblioplan here. That includes SOTW, but also lots of other great books I probably wouldn't find on my own.

Honestly, I was always pretty excited to start a new WinterPromise program. American Story and Children Around the World probably kept me happy the longest. My three-year-old was born in October of the year we did WinterPromise, so the other kids were 9, 6 and 3. I suspect that if I did it next year, when the kids will be 12, 9, 7 and 4, it would go much better. (As an aside, OMG MY KIDS'LL BE 12, 9, 7 & 4 NEXT YEAR!)

Sonlighters here. I like it because its really easy for me. And the kids love the maps and books and even the questions. :) I also love how I have options all the way thru Highschool and I dont have to make another curriculum choice for quite awhile

SOTW with the AG. It is my ds7's absolute favorite subject and it can be so rich if that is you want. We are taking it a bit slow but almost done with Volume 1, hoping to get to 2 soon which I have already bought and ds is excited about looking through the AG. This is something we would be doing even if we weren't homeschooling.

We both love, love, love everything in the geography curriculum I made myself. I am excited about it. DD loves it. Same with Shoot and Sprout Buzz and Bite. It is awesome! We still get less than half done because that is my life. I say give your 10 year old independent work, and read picture books outloud and maybe add an easy art program once a week. (the reason for the readalouds and art is just to have some exciting, fun learning break up the drudgery of the three R's) With that many kids and illness with pregnancy, the three R's are plenty. Cut it down to 2 R's if you need to. ;) I really don't see obsessing over the perfect program. Nothing will be perfect if you can't do it. Now, if you want a program to get excited about, (did I mention how much we love ours? I just smooshed CATW and AW together and adapted to our abilities) maybe plan on taking 2-3 school years to get through it. That is more realistic. For me anyway.
