What would you recommend for a "spine" for ancient history in a co-op for approx. grades 4-7? As I wrote in a previous thread, I've done this before, using The Pageant of World History as our spine, and then having the kids fill in with any other books they wanted for notebooking, projects, etc. I had wanted one common text so we could all be "on the same page" re basic info. Because PWH is out of print , though (I think), it's challenging to find used copies of the same edition. Is there another text-like book that could be used as a common spine for this age level? Would SOTW be to "young"? TIA.

You know, I do have that... I'll have to look it over; thanks for the suggestion.
Boy, it feels weird for us "veterans" to meet here on the K-8 board!

Usborne has an Ancient History book too, I am pretty sure it is internet linked.

Looking for more of a chapter/ narrative "text", rather than the Usborne style of short snippets and 2-pp spreads.

You could look at both A Little History of the World by Gombrich and/or The Story of Mankind by Van Loon. Both cover more than ancients, but also provide a nice narrative. The first 18 chapters of ALHW focus' on the ancients. You can find it in paperback at Barnes and Noble or Amazon for about $10. It would be a good spine for that grade range. You could then add in some extra reading from literature like Augustus Ceasars World.

Thanks. Do you prefer Gombrich to SOTW? Is SOTW too "young" for gr 4-7?

I think that SOTW Ancients is too young for 6th and 7th graders. They would probably find it a bit babyish. Although I would use the other levels of SOTW with that age group, just not I.
I'll be using Gombrich with my rising 7th grader next year with additional resources. I don't know that there is any better spine for logic stage. Maybe.....K12's Human Odyssey text? It's a bit pricey but is primarily Ancients through early Middle Ages. It's a big thick text, though, not narrative.
Is cost and availability an issue?
