Knitting for soldiers

My library is passing out knitting patterns of head covering to wear under helmets that they will collect and send to our soldiers. The covering provided to them is made of synthetic materials and are not warm enough so they suggest wool. The problem is I am allergic to wool and I can not knit with it. I am willing to bet that some soldiers are also allergic.

So, what should I make the head covering out of that will be warm, soft and durable?

I am surprised they only want wool. Can you just make some out of other types materials and add them in with the suggestion, 'just in case anyone is allergic to wool'.?
