I'm looking for a secular logic program that I can use for myself now and then for the dc in a few years. Any recs?

Have a peek at The Art of Argument by Classical Academic Press. It's designed for 8th grade and up. You can download nice sized free samples and see if it's what you had in mind.

We are using this in our home and I just cannot wait to dig right in. I have a degree in philosophy and cannot recommend this text highly enough. It is secular .

If you've seen it, could you comment on the difference? Is it just an updated version?

I'm currently using Patrick Suppes' "First Course in Mathematical Logic". It has many more exercises than the books recommended in WTM and is making much more sense to me. I also do the WTM books every now and then (IL and TL). The only drawback is that there are no answers in the book. I'm doing it with our dc who supply the answers for me.

Darla I have not seen this so I cannot say if it is the same. His writing is lucid and that for me is crucial. I will try to take a peek and determine if it is the same or not.

Thank you for this recommendation. I've been looking for an informal logic text without an agenda for a very (very) long time.

There are a LOT of newer used ones there. Seems the are a popular companion book for college texts.
I also found another by the same author (the one with the red cover I had posted a link to). I got both for less than the cost of one of them new.

This is kind of what I was thinking of starting with for my dc but hadn't really decided for sure yet.

Is this simple enough that a complete layperson can understand it? I have never had any sort of training or education in logic, so I feel I should go through some sort of course before attempting to educate my children in it.

Oh yes it is perfect for self study. I actually cringe a bit when I think about teaching formal logic so I am trusting the good folk at Memoria Press with that subject as it is absolutely my least favourite part of the study of philosophy.
