Mary Pride's Complete Guide to Getting Started Homeschooling has an excellent review and article by Art Robinson about how it works, and why he does what he does with it. He explains his goals for his children in every subject, and how the Robinson Curriculum is part of that. Reading that article really cleared up any misunderstandings I'd had about some aspects of it.

Now, we don't use Robinson, but we seriously considered it at one point. While we could've gotten the curriculum/CDs for free (you can write and request a scholarship if you're experiencing hardship), we would've had to purchase a nice printer and we just couldn't afford it at the time. We kept it in mind for later, but by then we'd moved on to something else.

We use a similar methodology sometimes....

Do one math lesson a day.
Write one paper a day.
Read two hours a day (quality literature that includes history, science, etc.)

We also do Bible, memory, etc.

If you buy the Robinson Curriculum, you're supposed to print off tons of old books for your kids to read off the 8 1/2x11 pages. We prefer regular books (cheaper, too, getting them from book sales, the library, etc.) I like making my own reading lists, too.

Sometimes I get in a panic that we need to cover one full grammar book each year... or do a specific science book, memorize the states & capitals, etc. Really, it's not hard to add those extras in.

But on those weeks when I'm bushed (I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) or have to work or whatever, the kids can work very independently using the RC method.
