Such as:
56-14= 56-10-4

This sample is from Singaporemath.com, from book 1B.

Does Saxon math also teach mental math tricks?

Yes....like 9+4 = 10+3 so far, in Saxon 2

In Saxon 1 when learning beginning addition facts, you learn that:

+1 facts are just counting forwards 1

+2 are skip counting (even +2 will be next even and odd +2 will be next odd)

Doubles +1, like 3+4, 4+5, 5+6, 6+7 .... are simple a double fact (which are the first ones memorized) plus 1 more. So when you see 6+7 the trick is to double the smallest # and add 1 more, so 6 doubled is 12 plus 1 is 13.

Haven't gotten any farther so I can't help you with more than that. But I think their "strategies" are helping my ds pick up math pretty quickly.

Not as much as Singapore does. (At least not from what I've seen. I might have missed something somewhere though.)

They teach it in 54 as well in the mental math part. My son strongly opposes it though and rather figure it out on paper.

I like the way Singapore teaches concepts that help with mental math. I don't think Saxon is nearly as good as Singapore when it comes to that. But, I love the way Saxon has incremental learning and lots of review.

However, I have found R&S to be the best of both. R&S teaches mental math tricks as well as having built in continual review.
