How do you know if your mummy is ready to wrap with cloth? I have been salting it for weeks now and I don't know how to tell if it is ready? Any foolproof ways you can share? Thanks!

Not fool proof but hope it helps.

I think my sister's went about 3 months. It should darken and lose a lot of weight (about 1/3 to 1/2 of its body weight.)

Does it have one of those buttons that pop when it's cooked? Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. I will keep it salted for awhile longer. He is pretty dried out but it can not hurt to keep him drying a bit longer.

I did a fish and remember asking "how do you know when your mummy was done". Laura answered "when she reaches for the chocolate" AFAIR.

You just know. I changed the baking soda daily for about 6 weeks, and suddenly I realized there was no dampness, no scent, and no change over the last few days. I oiled it and stuffed it with rosemary and wrapped it in surgical bandages and it is on my shelf, scentless and stiff enough to kill if flung at 20 paces.

When your 10yo says,

"Hey, Mom! Isn't that the chicken mummy in the back of the pantry?"

And it's February. And we did this in September.

It's either done, or a biohazard. :scared:
