I am planning on using Megawords next year. Which do you think would be a better choice to use along with it.... R&S Spelling or AAS? I am looking to mainly reinforce the rules along with Megawords for DS9 in 4th grade. Thanks

Don't use either R&S or AAS with Megawords -- just responding so you'll know someone DOES use Megawords in conjunction with some other spelling.:001_smile:

We use the ABCs and All Their Tricks as our spelling rules book/ideas for spelling words, and Megawords as our supplement. The ABCs is a spelling resource listed in alphabetical order of all the sounds and patterns used by the 26 letters of the alphabet. We use ABCs to create a spelling list to go along with/reinforce the vowel patterns being presented in Megawords.

I'm sure you'd do fine with either R&S or AAS, too. BEST of luck in deciding! Warmly, Lori D.

Megawords is thorough, and doesn't need a supplement if you use it according the the publisher directions. It covers rules, reading speed, spelling. I'd use it as directed in the teacher's manual, and only supplement if you feel you REALLY need to after using the Megawords program.

How much time per day did your kiddos spend doing Megawords???

On average, 5 minutes a day (to do 1 page a day). Once in awhile the page might take as much as 8-10 minutes. Only our younger son (who really struggles with spelling) does Megawords. He also spends another 5-10 minutes a day with me going over / practicing / discussing / working with the individualized spelling words/list to help bring his remedial spelling levels up.

We spend about 15-20 minutes.

We warm up by reading the list (across or down, as fast as possible).

We review the rules for the list given in the TM.

Dd does any workbook pages and I do any dictation needed.

I end by asking her to spell 5-10 words (orally) from her list (these are starred).

When she feels ready, we try the assessment for the list. This is all explained in the TM, and there is a place to record assessments in the back of the book. Goal setting has been motivating for dd. When she has reached her goal for reading speed and spelling accuracy, we note it and move on.

We are liking this program. It's been a hit for both of us!

How much time per day did your kiddos spend doing Megawords???Five to ten minutes (depending on the amount of writing), but we only use Megawords for spelling, not reading.
