I understand that All About Spelling teaches using the phonograms, and the spelling rules. However does All About Spelling teach the syllibication rules?
DS 9 has done well with Spelling workout, yet he is a natural speller. I want to make sure he knows and understands the phonics and spelling rules, especially as he gets to larger words, mutisyllibic words. He has made some mistakes in writing that indicate he has not mastered the rule. He may have learned the words for the lists, but is not necessarily applying the rules to spelling in his other work! UGH! So... I am thinking of using All About Spelling. Any other program recommendations?
Also, should I incorporate Megawords, as it teaches syllabication, or wait until he's mastered all the spelling rules first?, and then start Megawords?

Yes AAS teaches syllabication rules. I don't remember doing very much, if any last year with Level 1. This year in Level 2 dd has already learned 3 of the rules.

I think AAS is very strong in teaching syllabication. You get a chart that shows all the rules and magnetic labels for each type of syllable. The children are frequently dividing words with the tiles and labeling them.
As far as learning to apply the rules in writing, that's another issue. The only thing that has helped my 10yos to concentrate on spelling in all of his subjects is to charge him .25 cents for each spelling error when I know he knows how to spell the word but isn't being careful. I'm sure there are other ways, but that is what has worked for us.

What Parothead said.
I have been told Megawords covers the same rules at the same times by one person, but I haven't see it for myself.
It has taken my oldest about two years of covering words and spelling rules to apply them, and then she isn't doing it consistently. Though she is doing SWR and not AAS. SWR isn't mastery based like AAS.

My son was the only one of my children who used Megawords. It is a workbook, and I just don't think much was retained from it. AAS is a multisensory program with built in review. This has allowed my twins daughters to retain much of what they are being taught.
Syllabication rules are taught beginning in lesson 5 and 6 of level 2. The children are made to work at applying these rules in subsequent lessons.
I hope this helps.
