View Full Version : What brand of toilet paper do you buy?

Whisperlily

I sure miss Costco. Now that we don't have one, I feel like I'm buying toilet paper all the time. Some brands disappear faster than others, some are wayyy too expensive, some are too thin. Who knew that I'd even have to think about what brand to buy?

So can you help me? What brand to you buy, and why?

Charmin, only Charmin. I like the softness.

We buy Cottonelle in the purple package (2 ply), I can usually get it on sale, it's what dh prefers and it has the Box Tops on it, usually has coupons in the paper.

We buy the Aldi brand toilet paper. They have 2 different kinds and so I get the one-ply in double rolls. It lasts the longest and works well, not super soft though.

Dh brought home a package of some Charmin Ultra Strong and it was TOO thick and soft for me. LOL! It was like using a cotton towel and that's just wasteful. :p Some things ARE too good for your bum.

Charmin is the only thing for our family as well. We've tried going to lesser brands but dh and I didn't respond well to it at all. So, charmin it is.

Angel Soft or Cottonelle. I'll only buy it when it is on sale for 12 double rolls @ $4.99. Then, I stock up. I can't bring myself to pay more $ for tp. :D I've tried Seventh Generation & other more environmentally sound choices, but dh has vetoed each of them due to softness issues.

Anyone else ever hear this?

I prefer Charmin & Cottenelle, with Angel Soft being my 3rd choice. But the 12pk double rolls go on sale fairly often for $4.99, so that is when I buy the first 2.

We use Scott - we buy it in huge packs at the BJs or Costco. I like that each roll is individually wrapped, for storage. My kids complain if I get the cushy ones. LOL And we just can't tolerate the ones that seem to have fibers.

Scott is absolutely the best! It's a little more expensive, but in the end, costs less b/c the rolls last soooo long. I buy a 12-pack once a month for our family of 4. I don't like the extra soft kind, b/c it tends to plug up the toilet.

I've used Scott for probably 20 years, and have tried a few different brands during that time but always go back to Scott. I could go on preaching the virtues of it, but, hey, it's just toilet paper, right? :p

It's made from recycled paper and, while not as thick and soft as some of the premium brands, is just fine for its purpose. I buy the 12-pack of double rolls, and it lasts a really long time.

Charmin...always Charmin. I can't stand scratchy TP. (Let's not even talk about what passes for TP in public restrooms--shudder.) I do buy when I notice it's on sale but, more often than not, I pick up a big pack at Costco or Sam's (and then we don't run out).

hmm, we've been on a septic system for the last 20 years and I've never had problems with Charmin giving us any problems. This thread is the first time I've heard of folks steering clear of Charmin cause they have a septic system.

We've been using White Cloud. I forget which one, I just know they didn't have the one I prefer last time I went shopping so got the 'lesser' one and am NOT happy with it.

Otherwise I like Cottonelle, I just can't afford that cushiness :p And..my kids don't get cushy..they're too wasteful. I've considered getting the cheaper stuff for their bath and the good stuff for mine. But..that doesn't get me out of the too pricey purchase, so, I find a happy medium...in White Cloud.

What Scott's are y'all usin' that you're so in love with? I tried the stuff after a post like this raving about it..and I was NOT impressed AT ALL. It seemed thin and stiff. Not much better than that public restroom stuff mentioned in an earlier comment. It didn't last us any longer either. *sigh*

We use Cottenelle - mainly because dh likes it and it is regularly on sale at our Fred Meyer. I buy it whenever they have a coupon for it (which often coincides with a manufacturer's coupon in the paper), and so we keep stocked up on it :D On sale, it's about as cheap as the cheap brands.

Cottonelle - my latex allergy leaves me, ahem..., sensitive to some TP. Cottonelle seems to agree with me the best. :-} We are also on a septic system and the cottonelle website, at least, says it's safe for that. Can anyone speak to the contrary?

LizzyBee
02-21-2008, 03:40 PM
We have a septic tank, but we haven't had a bit of problem using Charmin. I know it's been discussed before, but I don't see why it would be a problem for septics. It's thicker, but you don't have to use so much because it's thicker. Other brands, you have to use a million sheets to make sure it doesn't tear through, ewwww. And there's one brand, Scott, I think, that is like using sandpaper.

my latex allergy leaves me, ahem..., sensitive to some TP.

Seriously?? My DH recently found out that many of his unexplained reactions are due to an allergy to latex. It's not a life threatening allergy, but certain things made of latex make him break out.

He'll kill me if he reads this, but he's also been the pickiest person about toilet paper... not necessarily what brand, but, well... he'd rather use flushable wipes (which we don't buy unless a toddler is having self-wiping problems). I'll leave it at that. Do some brands really have latex in them??? I would never have guessed.

Northern here, too. I hate Charmin. I don't like the smell. I don't like how it leaves lint-like stuff all over my hands. It's always Northern here, has been for years. It comes in large packages at the regular grocery store. It's reasonably priced. It's soft, but not too soft. It's strong, but doesn't feel like sandpaper (Scott is just plain harsh). :o)

Well, all I know is I found out the hard way that newspaper (maybe the print?) has latex in it. From that experience, I began to notice that some TP affect me similarly. I don't know if it's something related to the paper products or what but I've become very picky about my TP!

We have been getting the large boxes of POM at Sam's Club since it seems to last a lot longer than equivalent amounts of other brands. However, we just had our septic tank pumped and were told that most brands that claim to be septic safe are really not. They recommended Scott brand so we are planning to try that.

I just had my slow septic pumped and the guy recommended Scott. We love Charmin and he said there was a ton of it in there. AND that's after we have been very "frugal" with it lately due to the massive rain/snows we've had and a backup into the house.

We bought the Scott the other day and did a little experiment with one of square of 1ply Scott vs. one square of 2 ply Charmin in glass cups with water. The Scott breaks down MUCH quicker. The Charmin is still in good condition after several days and stirs. I hate the Scott but it's worth it to me to keep my old septic (30 yrs) clog free at this point.

We do have the low water use toilets, but our septic system is only ten years old so perhaps it is doing well or is a good model or something...I don't really know. It has never clogged up in any way, though we do have three times a year checks by a professional on it. It's funny because we have four toilets and three are just fine but one always gets clogged. I just had all my toilets snaked and he said there was no clogs (we use Charmin and I was concerned that my dds were flush tampons even though I have lectured them not too) but he fixed the toilet so that there was more water per flush so that it would flush stronger and therefore work better.
