OK, never took French... love the language, however I don't see myself learning enough to really help Mac (13). I took Spanish, but alas she is just not interested. :tongue_smilie:

Mac really wants to learn French, and has been struggling with French Prep 1 on her own this year. I'm looking for something a little easier for her to do on her own. I would like it to be high school level and not something that will deplete my funds (i.e. $300/ RS).

HELP! She is doing great in Latin, and I want her to feel good about learning French as well.

Many thanks for any advice you might share with this foreign language deficient mom. :D

Whether it is the best I do not know, but we use French in Action--despite my lack of French. Granted, I am learning with my son, who also studies Latin (which I studied back in the Ice Ages). The videos for FIA are available for free from the Annenberg Foundation. One needs to buy a text, student workbooks, a study guide and CDs. The 52 lessons essentially cover four years of high school French. The text covers all 52 lessons. The first workbook and CD set is used for lessons 1-26, two years of high school French (or two semesters of college French). You have some larger upfront costs, but these materials are used for a while.

When we started FIA, a friend provided a weekly conversation session. Now we are focusing more on reading and understanding spoken French with the hope that my son will have a chance to focus on conversation in an immersion experience.

Feel free to ask any additional questions you may have. I can't really compare FIA to other programs. I just know that when I was at homeschooling convention, my son and I looked at the foreign language programs there and were not convinced that any of them would work for us.

Thanks, we have looked at French in Action before. I'll have to take a second look.

It is buried in a thread about Spanish, but here's Katia's response (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=786038#poststop)to a comment I made.
