I'd start at the beginning of the series (The Thieves of Ostia) and see how you go.

This is from an 11 year old boy on the first one - "it was Ok" The first one involves killing dogs and that is very upsetting. Another girl I tutor said they gave her nightmares. So... there you go!:D

My boys (8 & 10) actually enjoyed these. We listened to the first 4 books on CD in the car, and while I agree w/ Laura (they aren't "fine art"), they are entertaining and they also provide a fairly decent glimpse of life during that era. Certainly read or listen to them in order-- the main characters are introduced in the first book and their relationships develop as you proceed.

My dd read most of them last year and loves them. As others have said, this isn't fine literature, but there is some interesting cultural and historical content.
