I've been doing Apologia Elementary for a couple of years. I want so badly for this program to work for our family, but it just isn't happening. My oldest is now doing Apologia general science independently. My youngest is doing simple science at his level. Now I need something for my 5th grader. I can not do another page of Apologia!
Don't get me wrong ~ love the Apologia. But... need... a... break!
Is there any good science made for a 5th grader to do independently? I can certainly help with experiments. I just would love to not have to do/read the science myself. Am I dreaming?

Now, I'm going to start by saying that this book can be boring and will put a person to sleep (more effective than a sleeping pill). However, I have a science major, and find this text naturally appealing. It's great for teaching outlining and notetaking from, and the activities that follows each lesson, are for the most part easy to perform. Materials needed can easily be found in your pantry or kitchen, and you can easily substitute.
I'm teaching at a small homeschool coop using this text, and I'm very pleased at what the kids are learning and retaining using this "boring" text. Much of it depends on the teacher's enthusiasm and presentation of material.
I consider any material a success when I continually stay with it, doing it consistently, up to the end. There will be times in between that you want to stop, but for the most part, the most successful learning in my own kids, happens when I stay with a material, tweaking/skipping/adding parts of it along the way.
DOn't give up. Science is such a fascinating subject and I consider myself blessed that I have this chance again to go through it but this time with my children.

We will use Christian Light Education Science next year. We are using R&S Science this year and my dc do not find using a textbook science program boring. In fact they really like it. We are switching to CLE because they use workbooks otherwise we would have continued with R&S.

We are using Rod & Staff, but like someone else said, there isn't a workbook to go with it.

We use Prentice Hall Science Explorer and love it. He reads and does section reviews and also does the activities mostly independent.
