View Full Version : Help!! I need to choose music for the slide show of my Dad's life

I am in charge of making the slideshow of my Daddy's first 50 years and I am struggling to come up with music. Something meaningful, Christian would be nice but appropriate secular music would be ok. So far I have "Life Song" by casting crowns. I have SCC stuff, some cadman's call, and Mercy Me cd's in my audio library but I am at a loss as to which songs to pick. I am willing to purchase a song or two if needed. I need about 2 more songs to fit with these pictures. many of the pictures are family if that helps for subject matter.
Somebody help me out here, I am drawing a blank!

How old is he? What music has he enjoyed over the years?
I mean, if it were *my* dad it would be Creedence, The Beatles and Van Morrison.

I agree with Mrs Mungo. Can you ask family what were his favorites as a child? a teen? What do you remember him listening to when you were a child?
I know some of this is hard to know about our parents. I was amazed by the deep connection my dad felt to Johnny Cash when Walk the Line came out -- but Dad grew up in Memphis (and spent most of his adult life there too) and just the time Cash was really starting out...
Ask around the family...
Is there anything you remember him singing -- either to you, or maybe while he worked? Not everyone sings / whistles / hums, but I know when I think of certain of my grandparents, certain songs pop into my head immediately (papa: Zippidee-Doo-Da, Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen... grandma: You are My Sunshine)...
I probably wouldn't pick more than one or two contemporary songs unless your dad has a really strong connection to them. Pick things that represent different eras or aspects of his life...

He is 50. Think Late 70's music. I think I need to find some crosby, stills, nash and young, but he really enjoys the contemporary Christian stuff too. hmmmm.

Freebird!!! Oh...sorry...*ahem*...too many concerts for me.

I saw you said it was for his first 50 years but I wasn't sure if that was his age or just the span for the video.
How about a popular song from the year he was born, the year he graduated high school, the year your parents married, the year you were born, etc.

Paul Overstreet has some really great songs! Family oriented.

oh, no Nancy He's not gone.... Just turning 50 :)
He was barely an adult when we were born so I do remember the music he liked. Thank you Mrs. M for your ideas, I just bought "teach your children well". How about something by the Eagles or Boston? hmm, P. Overstreet is good too.

Aw, Teach Your Children Well always makes me cry! Peaceful, Easy Feeling would be good from The Eagles.

I'm really glad your Dad is still alive! LOL
And now I will shamelessly go edit my last entry so as not to let on just how poorly I pay attention! :o

Nancy, you're not an idiot, that's the same thing I thought when I read the subject line and the OP. I didn't see any mention of "birthday" until I read a later post. :) Don't feel bad. (or, don't feel bad all alone, LOL)

Casting Crowns did something called Life Songs about personal life stories by Christians but I do not know much about it.
Sorry I could not help more,

I always thought if I did this kind of thing for someone I would use the song Times of Your Life by Paul Anka (it's from the old old Kodak commercials).

"Teach Your Children Well" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6pphVs8bF0) by Crosby, Stills and Nash is a good song to tie the generations and show him growing from child to young adult to parent to grandparent. Well, maybe. Reading the lyrics now it's a little bittersweet. Still, it's one he's sure to be familiar with. Don't most people know and love this song?
George Strait's "The Best Day" and "Love Without End Amen" are nice songs about fathers and children. "The Best Day" would be especially good for your purposes if he has/had a good relationship with his own father.
Paul Overstreet's "Seein' My Father In Me" is a good pick.
I've probably got more about fatherhood, but it sounds like you want several songs to represent different periods and aspects of his life. If there are any specific periods/aspects you'd like to represent, list them. I'll try to come up with songs to go with.

Aside from the CSNY, Eagles, type that have been mentioned, how about Dirt Road or The Walk both by Sawyer Brown. Ridin' the Storm Out by REO Speedwagon? Styx? Led Zepplin? For some fun, something from Queen?
The two songs that have come to my mind are The Walk of Life and I hoep you had the time of your life...but he still has PLENTY of years, so I don't know if that would seem wierd.

except he was 70. Anyway, the song that went over the best was In My Life, by the Beatles. Beautiful song! and perfect for that 70's era. We also chose Wind Beneath my Wings. Totally cheesy I know, but it's my dad's favorite song!

How about that one that goes
"Yesterday, a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was filled with thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star.
And the seasons, they go round and round
Painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look
behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the Circle Game"
"]Youtube of song[/URL]
There's Water color ponies also, by Wayne Watson
and this one-- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSSR7PtTQoM)
not the best version, but it's a good song

Thanks everyone! Such great suggestions now I am going to have to choose between them, What a great problem to have! I decided to do a separate thing of just My sister and I am our 4 dd's. Right now he is really in love with the Steven Curtis Chapman "Cinderella" song which is very butterfly kisses/ water color ponies-ish. He will totally cry but it will be great. :D
My dh already thinks I am nuts for volunteering to do this at all so I am sure he will be thrilled (not!) when I tell him I am doing a second one just of us girls.
It is turning out really well and once I make final music selections it will be perfect. Thank you so much for all of your help.

He's 50?! My dh turns 50 this month. Now I feel old.
Dh likes the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Los Lobos, America, Gloria Estefan, Chicago, Santana, and really anything Mowtown or "cool jazz"
For Christian music he has cd's by Acapella, Rich Mullins, and Randy Travis.
I have no idea if this will help.

I'm in that age group, and thought of a great song by Jim Croce called "Time in a Bottle (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/jim+croce/time+in+a+bottle_20071486.html)". It's a famous song that I'm sure you could download from the Internet.

I agree, that song is perfect! BTW, Did anyone go to Women of Faith last fall and hear Nichole Nordeman sing live? I was there at the Portland, OR conference and was blown away by her. She is an amazing musician.
Blessings,
Lucinda
