I don't know much about classical music so I have no idea what would be the best arrangements for my dc. My dd9 really likes listening to it. I've gotten the classical cd's from the library and I wasn't that impressed with them. Any ideas of what to use just for listening purposes? Thanks

There is a series called Classical Kids that is wonderful. There is a story woven in with some of their music:
Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Mr. Bach Comes to Call
Tchaikovsky Discovers America
Vivaldi's Ring of Mysery

I was going to suggest the same thing. :001_smile: We found these at our library and my kids enjoyed them.

I just realized if my post I forgot to type Kids after Classical! Sorry ladies, any other suggestions? The Classical Kids cd's just didn't work for us. I'm looking for something without a story along with it.

We have used Classical Masterpieces of the Millenium this year. There are 20 composers (1 CD per composer). We picked a few to start with and just listen to one in the morning while I make breakfast. We listen to the same one for about 6 weeks, then switch. We have loved it. Gives us time to hear the pieces over and over and associate those tunes with the comnposer. Love to hear my kids humming the classical tunes while they play.

Here it is http://www.amazon.com/Classical-Masterpieces-Millennium-20-Set/dp/B00000K1C9 but I didn't pay that much for it. You may be able to find it cheaper somewhere else. I know I paid less than $100, and I'm pretty sure it was more like $50. Anyway, there are enough here that we will be using them next year too.

This box set looks really good but I don't have it yet...

This cd I do have and like and it's super cheap. There are others like it of individual composers or different musical periods as well.

We have enjoyed these:

and the Vox Music Masters, with the story at the beginning. Kiddo loves the life of Berlioz the best....not sure why!

We choose one composer each month. I play cds during different points of the day- breakfast, lunch, car rides, art time, etc. We also listen to a Music Master cd focusing on the composer- they are long and a bit dry but full of factual information, which is important to me! (You can go here to see those: http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1233800432-1556582&subject=17&category=5644) I like to let the kids color & read about the composer using "A Coloring Book of Great COmposers" (go here: http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1233800432-1556582&subject=17&category=5644) Finally, I am reading aloud from "The Gift of Music." Of course, we do not always get to everything! LOL

Ambelside Online has absolutely fantastic selections and suggestions of what to listen to based on a composer's best works. I use the list to find CD's at the library all the time.
