View Full Version : Two Piece or Not Two Piece... That is my question!

What are your thoughts regarding modesty and two piece swimsuits? I struggle with the idea of wearing something appealing for my husband and yet modest enough for my children/others. My husband has picked out my last two suits - two pieces (not tankinis but on the conservative side of the spectrum- if there is such a thing).
In the past, I have dressed to the occassion. Church function - one piece with surf shorts. Beach - two piece with cover-up if walking around. I have some friends that don't take their boys to public pools after a certain age and I respect their opinion.
How do you handle the balance of husband's wishes and being appropriate in public? Personally, I want to please my husband for as many years as I am able by wearing what he enjoys but still struggle with being appropriate. Curious about your opinions.
Thanks,
Amy

I have a two piece. The top is longer, not a bikini type. Very cute...if I do say so myself. ;) It's MUCH more flattering than on me than a one piece. Would something like that work? There are also some called tankinis.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong or inappropriate about wearing a reasonably-modest two-piece bathing suit. I could be wrong but it sounds like you're receiving pressure to be "modest" from some of the women in your life. It's OK for them to have their opinion but it's also OK for you to feel differently, even if you respect them. On the other hand, if you're uncomfortable showing your body and your husband is pressuring you to dress more sexy that's a different story. You should wear what *you* are comfortable in, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

My two piece is covering as well. I prefer them also because of my shape. I am not ready yet to look like a grandma. I was thinking of checking Land's End for a top cover-up to put on when out and about.

It's a pretty even trade. :)
I wear a tankini with a skirt (Land's End) because it's what I'm comfortable with. My husband's comfort level is much different than mine. It's my own humble opinion that husbands need to respect that. I'll take my husband's desires into consideration, but ultimately it's me who has to wear the thing, so I get the final vote.

I know what you mean. My dh would love for me to walk around in a bikini all day, but that's just not always the best example. If I'm at home, just with my dh and kids then I will wear my 2 piece. If we are at them beach then I will wear a cover-up or a tankini with shorts. It's important to me that my little girls see that our body is a private matter, not to be shown off. To me that is just part of being a Godly little lady. My best way to know if I should or shouldn't wear something is this...If I have to ask my hubby if what I'm wearing is appropriate, then it's probably not.

Thanks for your reply. Wow! I think you are right on. I tend to think sometimes more of others opinions of what I "should" be than on pleasing my husband. My husband was a pastor/now a chaplain and if he's ok with it, I am too. I enjoy the suits he has picked out for me... and am tickled he enjoys the way I look.

when we were at the beach this winter. I told him if I had to wear a two piece, he needed to don a speedo. We thought for the general public it would be better if he didn't!!

I wouldn't wear a bikini because I wouldn't want to show that much skin in public, keeping other men and young boys in mind. That's a very real concern in my mind. If my dh wanted me to wear one though, I would around our house and yard....just not out in public. I think it's important to please our husbands for sure.
Just my 2 cents worth....

Two good points, Steph!
1 - part of being a Godly little lady is not showing off your body...
I struggle with finding the difference between "showing off" and trying to look my best in an appropriate manner.
2. And if I had to ask my husband if what I am wearing is appropriate , it's probably not.
Thanks for sharing,
