Our youngest has his surgery next friday. I teach the two general music classes at our co-op, and want to keep the following week's lesson easy for me to plan and carry out. I was thinking a good DVD would be nice...can you recommend one for this age group?

My first thought was Fantasia, but the copy our library has is out until April. So that won't work.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. We are covering different pieces that tell a story...so something along the lines of a ballet would be nice too.

Thanks.

"Peter and the Wolf", "Hansel and Gretel", "Carnival of the Animals".

This version of Peter and the Wolf is now out of print, but it's really wonderful. Perhaps your library has it?

Or perhaps "Beethoven Lives Upstairs"?

Mr. Bach Comes to Call (by the same people who did Beethoven Lives Upstairs), Magic Flute, Coppelia, Nutcracker, Swan Lake and other ballets. I just saw that Amazon has a downloadable Beethoven Lives Upstairs for $9.99.

If your library system has it, or even Netflix, there is a wonderful series Leonard Bernstein did way back in the late 1950s/early 1960s. It is called something like "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" or something (similar but different from the Benjamin Britten composition!) He talks about the music, has the New York philharmonic play it. There are several in the series.

I loved them as a kid, they were on CBS Sunday afternoons...boy am I old!

Any of the videos/DVDs of the PBS Great Performances would be perfect, too, whether ballet or opera. If I think of something else, I'll post later.
