I'm planning to use Lightning Lit 7 next year and I'm wondering how much time daily I should budget? Actually, I'm interested in other's schedules. Its hard for me to look at it and come up with a schedule.

Thanks!:001_smile:

There is a schedule included with the teacher's material. The time required will vary widely depending on the student's reading speed and writing abilities.

When I looked at the TM online it only showed a weekly schedule. I'd like some more help figuring out how much time is needed daily. I have a tendency to over schedule so I'm trying to be careful what I order this year!:tongue_smilie:

Cool! Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for. It's similar to a Sonlight schedule. This helps me make sure I'm not planning too much!

I follow the weekly schedule. I would say the weeks spent just reading a book take approximately 30min per day 5 days per week. We discuss the comprehension questions for the chapters read on Friday. When he's done reading the book, we go through the discussion questions as well. The weeks going through the additional material, I schedule 2-3x per week and they take 30-45 min per day. Ds does the lesson (L), mini-lesson (M), thinking skills (T), grammar (G) if he could use the review, and does 1 of the essays. We skip almost all the composition (C), puzzles (P), and extra challenge (E) pages.

Thanks Sue! This is so helpful! I try to plan by how long the subjects should take.

This looks so great - I was looking to supplement my lit. in ToG and this looks like what I need.

My son will be in 8th grade, should I start him in 8th? After looking at the website - it looks like I could. He has a strong background in grammar (R&S) and has done Classical Writing and Reading Detective. Thanks for the info and the suggestion on a great program.

We spent about 40-50 minutes a day, 4 days a week on Lightning Lit -- and that included doing all of the reading out loud together. If your student is a good solo reader, it would probably be closer to 30-45 minutes a day, 4 days a week. Below is what LL schedule looked like here. We discussed as we read, so we didn't have to schedule additional time for that.

All I adapted from the schedule in the book is that once we started reading the literary work, we also took a little time the first week to read the teaching information on that literary element, and then did the student workpages (1 page a day) also while reading the work. That allowed us to devote a full week with no reading after finishing reading the book to just writing the longer writing assignment at the end of each unit. For the short story and poetry units, we would get through the reading in one week, so the second week, we'd do 2-3 student workpages a day to finish in 1 week, and then take the following week for the longer writing assignment -- so you'd have 2 weeks of no reading following the week you read the short story or poems.

Hope that was clear! :tongue_smilie: Warmest regards, Lori D.

week 1
day 1
- Student Guide = read intro to the specific work (5 minutes)
- Book = begin reading the book (20-30 minutes)

day 2, 3, 4
- Book = read/discuss together (20-30 minutes)
- Student Guide = read 2-3 pages of teaching information for that unit each day (5-10 minutes)

week 2 and week 3
day 1, 2, 3
- Book = read/discuss together (20-30 minutes)
- Student Workpages = do 1 page (10-20 minutes) -- sometimes 2 pages if very short; sometimes 1/2 page if very long

day 4
- Book = read/discuss together (20-30 minutes)

week 4... until book is finished
day 1, 2, 3, 4
- Book = read/discuss together (20-30 minutes)

week after book is finished
day 1
- select topic for longer writing assignment; begin brainstorming/jotting down an outline

day 2
- finish outline; begin writing

day 3
- continue writing

day 4
- finish writing; begin revising

day 5
- finish revising; type up finished copy

Begin with next literary work and repeat.
