Questions about using Sonlight Core C, Grade 2 readers, and Core 1 secularly.

We are using Core C this year. We did not care for "Mother Goose"
or "Hero Tales". Would you just eliminate these or do you have a
recommendation for another book to take their place?

What would you substitute the Beginner's Bible with - in the Grade 2
readers?

Next year we'll be using Core 1, grade 1, and grade 3 readers since we
prefer to use secular materials, is there anything I should pass on using?

For Hero Tales, there's a book by William Bennett, Children's Book of Heroes that you can substitute. SL uses the Virtue book from the same series in Core B. The Mother Goose they have in Core B is much better than the one that's now in Core C, but there's a Tomie de Paola version that's nice if you like his illustrations.

Subbing the bible reader in LA 2 would be tough because it's used for so much of the year.

For Core 1, I am planning to skip From Akebu to Zapotec, George Muller, Missionary Stories with the Millers. I'm planning to use Children Like Me, another biography, and Geraldine McCaughrean's myth books (Bronze Cauldron, Crystal Pool).

Another thing I've discovered is that I prefer using older versions of the IGs because they have fewer notes. I'd rather wing it than read some of the commentary in the IG, but YMMV. I have both a 2004 K and a 1998 K. The 1998 IG suits me much better. I got it as a freebie when I bought a bunch of books otherwise I would not have known the difference.:p

We don't do Mother Goose either, my dd just doesn't like it. So I don't think you'll miss it if you don't use it. I dont' know about Hero Tales though, we do use this one and it's all that scheduled for history on some weeks, so I think I would replace it with something. As for the Begginners Bible for next year, we just went to the Salvation army and got a whole bunch for early readers for less than a dollar a piece. I plan on using those next year, but we are not doing Sonlight's LA either so it doesn't matter if they match up. Hope that helps you!
