Just wondering if there is anyone here who has a child with a visual impairment? (I haven't seen anyone post, but who knows...any lurkers?) ...Our son is totally blind (among other things) - I was just wondering if there was anyone else kicking around, any other families with blind (or low vision) kids? :)

Right now we are OK in that area. My girls both wear glasses but they have 20/20 vision with them and not too bad without them.

They do though have the gene for Leber's Herediatary Optic Neuropathy which, if it hits, will cause blindness in a few weeks time in one or both eyes--maybe total and maybe only central vision loss.

Right now though, we have so many other things going on that I don't have time to worry about that.

Hopefully someone else can help you out.

My daughter has a visual impairment/low vision. She was born with cataracts (as was DH and youngest son...autosomal dominant bilateral cataracts). As a result of her cataract surgery she developed glaucoma that has been difficult to control. The growth of the optic nerve in her left eye was stunted and she has only limited peripheral vision in that eye. The vision in her other eye is a little better. She does wear contact lenses and glasses for reading, but that is a long, slow process. Took an hour to answer four reading questions on the Stanford test Monday. I just about gave up, but my friend administering the test said she didn't mind waiting on her and she did actually speed up a bit.

My son had an optic neuropathy starting in February until the present, with intermittent blindness in each eye.

Many people recommended audio books. Also, I've joined Netflix, where you can find just about ANY movie about ANY subject. This was helpful for my son's hospitalizations, since he did have some vision, but schooling wasn't realistic.
