I am finding LA very difficult. It does not come naturally to ds (just going into grade 7...we start the school year next week)
It seems to me that there is so much LA, and we cannot get it all done.
Am I right in assuming LA consists of:
Grammar
Spelling
Literature
Poetry
Creative Writing
Transactional (essay/letter/etc) writing
Punctuation
Vocabulary
And if so...how do you fit it all in. If we tried we would do nothing but LA all day! What do you use? How long does it take? All ideas gratefully received.
Thank you
Willow.

My son does not naturally take to Language Arts either.
Here is what he does as a 9th grader.
grammar: CLE
literature: Lightning Lit
vocabulary:Vocabulary for Achievement
composition: a mix of things
I think by 7th grade depending on the child, you can drop spelling and go with vocabulary. My son is not a great speller, but we moved on to vocabulary. When my son was in 7th grade we did reading. CLE reading includes vocabulary, so I did not add a second vocabulary book.
I also have my son write summaries as he reads through a chapter book. This gives him daily writing even if it is only a paragraph.

Have you considered purchasing something that is comprehensive? For example, Galore Park So You Really Want to Learn English 2 or 3 would be good for a 7th grader. My 12 yo is using Level 2 right now. It is challenging, includes everything, and doesn't take forever to do. They are also coming out with higher levels I think. Some think it is light on grammar and it does not include diagramming. But it is quite easy to add in diagramming if you so choose. The books are available from Book Depository with free shipping. It is really an excellent program.

I've never used Learning Language Arts Through Literature, but I've looked at it before, maybe this maybe a good way to incorporate all the subjects you want to cover
