I am trying to plan ahead. My son will finish Primary Math 6B next year and I am wondering if I don't want to do NEM where do I go for Algebra or Pre-algebra? I would like something that will go from pre-algebra to trig or calculus so that he can stay in the same thing. He may go to high school as we have been talking about it but just in case he doesn't I do want to be able to give him a good math program. I would like for him to take algebra and then geometry at home at least. Anyway, anyone use Singapore what did you use after it? Saxon does not work for us my son hates all the spiraling and goes to tears in boredom. Thanks for any suggestions.

All 4 of my boys worked through Singapore 6. Then we went four different directions - go figure. Oldest used NEM, 2nd used Lial's Intro. Alg then Jacobs Geo. and Lial's Intermed. Alg, 3rd son is using Jacob's Algebra now and 4th son is using Life of Fred Beginning Algebra.

I never did a pre-algebra course per se with any of them. However many of the beginning algebra books include an introductory section to review pre-algebra principles.

There are a lot of ways you can go. All of the ways we went have been very successful with the various boys. Are you looking for something with a video component? Do you want something written more for homeschoolers or something from the mainstream public realm? Is your student young emotionally but mature mathematically? All of my boys had different needs at the time of beginning algebra so I tried to find the best fit for each student.

If you anticipate your son going to public high school you might do well to see what series they use. That might give you a better idea of what to use. Not that you would necessarily use the same series, but you would be able to learn its strengths and weaknesses and perhaps find a program that would build a good foundation for that series.

Best wishes.

Are you looking for something with a video component?

It doesn't matter if it has video or not.

Do you want something written more for homeschoolers or something from the mainstream public realm?

That doesn't matter either as long as it is a good program.

Is your student young emotionally but mature mathematically?

In a lot of ways he is young emotionally but is mature mathematically. I am not sure if he will be that way next year or if it will catch up but so far it has always been that way all his life.

The program doesn't have to have a pre-algebra because I don't know that he will need it.

We did NEM1-3+Keys to Algebra1-3, then CC pre-calculus for the oldest. Next one is in the middle of NEM2 now, and I plan to do the same thing, except that next year he will do a formal geometry program as well as NEM3.

Discovering Mathematics is also from Singapore. It's for grades 7-10, just like NEM, but looks much more approachable to me. I'm thinking of doing one year of that and then transitioning to a traditional Alg/Geometry/AlgII etc. sequence.

My oldest went from Singapore 6B to NEM 1-3, with Keys to Algebra, and Dolciani Algebra I and II. He is mathmetically mature (sidenote---he has a huge paper due in his AP English Comp class tomorrow and needed a break. He asked me if it was OK for him to do some Calculus problems for relaxation! LOL!!!)

My second son went from Singapore 6B to Keys to Algebra (he finds them very boring) to Dolciani. He is not mathematically mature enough to go into NEM yet.

Foerster's will get you from alg I through calculus, but you would have to go to a different author for geometry. We liked Jacob's.

You may find that pre-alg is too simple for a student who has been through Singapore. You can always take a little longer with the alg I book.

I am watching to see what other people say. Right now I am considering a Foerester/NEM cobo (we hs year around, so we have time for two). But LOF also looks interesting....my dd wants to go into science though, so there will be lots of math in her future. :D

This question has been asked on the K-8 board. That is where I got the idea to do the book from this website

http://www.perpendicularpress.com/math6.html

It is a Russian math book. Search on the K-8 board for Russian math.

We have a few more weeks left of Primary 6B then we will start it. My older two went straight to NEM 1-3 then geom, then Foersters Alg 2

This child is a 5th grader and I just don't feel he is read for NEM. I did Keys to Algebra with my 2nd before NEM, but I didn't like it.
