I'm looking for a meaty secular earth science text for a kid who is loving Conceptual Chemistry and will be working on Conceptual Physics next year. (He's 12, we'll do another round of chemistry & physics later.) I know there are open physics & chemistry texts and courses--is there anything along those lines for earth sciences? If not, any recommendations for standard textbooks?

Power Basics Science textbooks are totally secular. I used their Earth-Space Science textbook last year with my 6th grader. It is aimed at Jr High to High School. Recently there was a thread on this board about earth-science stuff too. You might be able to find it --- here it is:

I picked mine up from Rainbow Resources.

I think that the forensic science texts might be fascinating for my 12 year old Sherlock Holmes fan ...These are secular and they will send you a catalogue as well. Hope this helps

I found this book on paperbackswap. Tarbuck Earth Science (http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Science-Textbook-Edward-Tarbuck/dp/0005423716/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233199892&sr=8-5). It appears to be very meaty. It is also from Prentice Hall. I have not used it yet, but plan to in a few years.
