McGuffey Eclectic reader? Two questions

For oral reading WTM suggests these starting with the third reader after a phonics primer. She prefers the originals republished by John Wiley and Sons. I have two questrions.
1. What are the differences between the various versions?
2. Will they work with any religious philosophy?
