Is anyone currently homeschooling in Hawaii, particularly the Big Island? I cannot seem to find any homeschool groups for that island online. I'm just looking for general information - Is it easy to homeschool? Is it expensive to live there? Are the national and state parks accessible and affordable? Are there many public boat ramps?
Thanks!

Some yahoo groups:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BigIslandHomeschoolers/ This is mainly for the Puna/Hilo area.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KonaHomeschool/?yguid=192906258 This is for the Kona Side.
I don't know that there is anything up in Have but they do have a Waldof inspired school. And in Waimea there is a prep school.
Moving to Hawaii:
http://www.hiloliving.com/Hilo_Move.html This is by a homeschool family who moved to Hilo.
We plan on retiring to the Big Island and I would be happy to talk with you more off-list.
Hope this helps.

I live in Hawaii, but on Oahu. Homeschooling is very easy here. The basic requirements are:
- Send a notice of intent to the public school your child would be attending.
- Send a "report" at the end of the year. Can be as simple as "All goals met."
- Testing is required for 3rd, 5th, and 8th grades. We get together with a group of other homeschoolers for this and send in our scores at the end of the year.
Yes, it's expensive to live here! I don't think we could do it without commissary privileges and the military housing allowance we get. But we love it and are on our 3rd tour.
You're welcome to email me. I don't know anything about homeschooling on the Big Island, but I may be able to give info on other things.
