Paris looked on Aphrodite and in his eyes she was the fairest goddess.
What is goddess???
Isn't it a direct object of "was"? I'm not positive, but since it's a compound sentence, it seems like it is . . .

she=subject, was=linking verb, goddess=predicate nominative

No, it can't be a direct object because 'was' is a linking verb. Direct objects only follow action verbs.

LOL - it's been a long time for me, and ds is only in 3rd grade, so we haven't gotten there yet :D

Dear KH,
I wouldn't have even attempted to answer this question 6 months to a year ago. I'm pretty sure I'm right, but I still don't have a lot of grammar confidence yet. I'm astounded at what I didn't know about grammar. Fortunately R&S grammar, Latin, & CW are giving me a firm foundation in grammar along with my boys. In addition, I went through Jensen's Grammar on my own this past fall. Things are finally starting to fall into place...
Take care,
