I've heard that if you study Latin you can forego an English grammar program? Does anyone here do this? If so, what do you use for Latin? I'm afraid I would be missing something if we didn't do English grammar.

We are doing this year for grades 4th and 5th using LC for Latin and WT 1 + 2 for our writing program. This is the first year we have done this after using R&S grammar. LC doesn't go out of its way to include English grammar but you can't help but reinforce it because just in LC I, the boys are learning person, tense, parts of speech, and the role of the noun in the sentence. WT also has weekly grammar lessons. It feels great to let go of an extra subject and still reach the same goal. My plan for the younger boys is to use FLL through 3rd grade to establish the ground work then start with Latin and Writing Tales. I'm not sure that I could never do English grammar but I feel comfortable dropping once Latin and a writing program are started.

and are exposed to a lot of English grammar. My ds, who just turned 8, now knows what a noun, verb, predicate, predicate nominative (these last 2 I never knew!) and other parts of speech are. We started learning how to diagram sentences today.

Years and years ago, Latin was used to teach English grammar. It is impossible to learn Latin without learning proper English grammar.

We love Lively Latin and can not wait for the next book to come out (supposedly in late Summer I believe). Minimus is more a fun program and I would never solely rely on it to teach Latin or English grammar.

There are many people who take this approach. Here's a link to the Latin Classical Education Yahoo! group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LatinClassicalEd/?yguid=146755137

The book, Latin-Centered Curriculum, addresses this too: http://www.memoriapress.com/descriptions/Latin-Centered.html However, there's a new edition coming out soon. The author uses these boards, so I'm sure he will chime in on this subject.
