For those who use CLE literary analysis...

I read several old posts about literary analysis programs for upper grades (7th and up) and saw that CLE was recommended. I searched their website but can't find a product that appears to include literary analysis. Can someone who uses the program direct me?

They do use excerpts instead of entire works, but we've used it for several years and have been very pleased. It's only for 1st-8th grade though, and covers only half a year for 4th and up.

I have contemplated using this for my boys but I've really wondered about the excerpts. Are they well known stories? excerpts from classics? written by the people at CLE? Is it mostly just literary analysis? Or are there other activities that they do?

For anyone that uses it, why do you use/like it? What makes it so great?

We used CLE 7 this fall (we are doing Art of Argument now), and I will use CLE 8 next year. The stories are wonderful! Very well-written. A lot of variety in type ~ some fiction (short stories), some essays, some poetry. Many are very moving. All point toward and teach about biblical character traits. I am so, so glad we used this. We also read "whole" books and occasionally use a guide to go with those. However, I feel learning these literary terms and devices is best done within the context of shorter works. There is so muc to this program. They also teach roots and logical fallacies.

I must say, when it first arrived, I was underwhelmed, but once I started using it and got into it, I was thrilled to have it. Some of the authors were people I have heard of, but not all. It is all top quality though.

Some from classic children's literature, some lessor known children's stories from older readers, and some Mennonite stories. Some time back someone asked about using them as a secular program, and I have to say that they wouldn't work for that. They are very much Christian readers and some of the questions ask for Biblical application.

I've been very pleased with the mixture of exercises the require careful reading and thought and a bit of appropriate literary analysis. To give an example, today my 6th grader was working to identify cases of an understatement, metaphor, simile, and exaggeration in particular sentences. That led to a discussion of those devices in advertising and several other instances that he thought of.

There are samples in the photo section of the CLE Yahoo group, although I'm not sure about the upper grades.

We have been using CLE readers for the past 2 years, and we have been very pleased. I often draw a crowd when it is time for my 4th grader to do oral reading. She and I take turns reading, and her sisters seem to creep out of the wood work to hear the stories.

The light units (workbooks) are very user friendly. They deal heavily with literary devices even at the 4th grade level.
