I need a homeschooling book. Not necessarily a "how to" and not necessarily an "encouragement" type book. Just a great read. What are some of y'all's favorites???

I loved The Unschooling Handbook! (can't remember the author!) I also liked Nancy Wallaces book Child's Play. These are unschooling oriented and while I don't unschool per se, I found them very inspiring! A few other favorites is David Gutersons "Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense"...I LOVED that book! Also Rachel Gathercoles "The Well Adjusted Child: Social Benefits to Homeschooling" and another favorite is: Homeschooling Our Children, Unschooling Ourselves by Alison McKee.

I love "Help for the Harried Homeschooler" by Christine Field. Another good one, that is not exactly homeschool related is "Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers."

I loved A Patchwork of Days. It is a compilation of many homeschool parents describing a "typical" day. I love seeing the differences in styles, curriculum, etc.

I read this over again every couple of years to remind myself that every family is different and there is no one "right" way to homeschool. It's very freeing and encouraging to me for some reason!

I second this! It's always good to see all the different ways homeschool can be done.

I like "So You're Thinking About Homeschooling" by Lisa Whelchel. Even though I am not new to homeschooling, I like to get this book out and read it from time to time. There are several different families and different kinds of homeschooling portrayed and I like to read about all the ways there are to homeschool.

Also, I like "Beyond Survival" by Diana Waring

I hate the title because it sounds arrogant but I did appreciate a lot of the information in it. I would not agree with some of the extreme views in the book but again there are many well written arguments for homeshooling in the book.
Homeschooling: the Right Choice by Chris Klicka

Another good one is Educating the Whole Hearted Child by Sally Clarkson

I second this recommendation, but it is by no means an easy read. Go slowly. Contemplate. Reread. But it's worth it.
