All of Austen's books
Jane Eyre (Bronte)
Middlemarch (Eliot)
North and South and Wives and Daughters (Gaskell)
Shakespeare

Those were the absolute favorites. Others that they really enjoyed:

Beowulf (we read it aloud to each other - Heaney's translation.)
Gulliver's Travels
anything by Dickens
selections from La Morte D'Arthur (audio book recording by Derek Jacobi)
(this one was a surprise) Anglo-Saxon poems and riddles

My 11th ds enjoyed Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, and Oliver Twist over the high school years. My 8th grade ds loved Oliver Twist this year. So for us, Dickens has been the biggest hit.

My co-op English class girls loved Jane Eyre.

Pride and Prejudice was also a big hit among the guys and the girls.

Take care. ;)

ER: Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

Me: Silas Marner and Wuthering Heights

We especially enjoyed film versions of the following (I tried to select versions that are faithful to the books):

A Tale of Two Cities
A Christmas Carol

both Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility (plus the film versions---the A&E version with P&P and Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility. Also, dittos to all things Shakespeare---we've read Macbeth, Hamlet, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, King Lear, and some others. Tolkien and Lewis too, of course.

Thanks!

Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Hamlet...

We are using Sonlight's British Literature Core (just started in January) and these are the favorites so far.

Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat OR any of John Buchan's writings...

These are not are *only* favorites, but they hadn't been pointed out thus far.

Have fun reading!
