I am shocking myself.

For someone who has only read these boards for years, to have two questions in one day is amazing. You can tell by my limited posts I don't do this very often. Thanks for putting up with the questions.

What would you use if you are starting a 8th or 9th grader in Latin for the first time? No Latin or foreign language experience. He has used Rod and Staff English for 3rd-8th and done really well. Need something that can be mostly self taught.

Thanks,
Tammi

Galore Park's So You Really Want to Learn Latin 1
Galore Park's Latin Prep 1
Lively Latin

I would suggest either of the Galore Park texts for your ds. LP 1-3 covers the same amount of material as SYRWTL Latin 1-2. My dd likes the format of SYRWTL Latin, while LP fits my Ds#1 better. There are samples on the website of both books.

I like Getting Started With Latin. It's very gentle and easy to use, and gets the student translating simple sentences right away. It's also fairly inexpensive and has website support.
