Well, I spent several hours deliberating over curtains today for our bedroom and finally bought a mix of scarf, sheers, and beads that I really liked. Well, when I got home after all that time (did I mention I hate shopping!), I realized that everything I bought is 84" and we have 9' ceilings. After all that time I spent, the ones I like and bought are only available in 84" length.

The windows from top of frame to bottom are ~76". I hung one set and they are ~15" from the floor. They look ok to me, but I am not quite sure. Is this a design faux pas? I spent too much money to change my mind later...... Is there some curtain "rule" out there?

Update......(edit from last night) I spent way too much time reading about curtains on the internet last night. I am still really confused. Standard lengths seem to be 63 (too short) for sill length), 84 (too long for sill length, too short for floor), 95 (will still be about 4 inches too short) and 108 (which will puddle on the floor). So, it seems I either have to go with the 84 or puddle unless I custom?? (I'm not keen on the puddle idea. My kids do the vacuuming and that seems like a scene from America's Funniest Videos waiting to happen!!)

If all else fails, I will sew the contrasting colors on (have no idea when I'll be able to do that, I still haven't finished unpacking!) Or I guess I could shorten the 84 to sill length......Or is it OK to leth them hang about 8 inches below the sill and let it be!!

You could get a coordinating fabric so they would go to the floor. Or you could have your dh take them back and get the right lenghth. (I hate shopping too).

Ok, I admit it. I am pathetic and I am responding to my own post so that it will reappear on the first page.:o Anyone??

There are no hard and fast rules for decorating your house unless you are selling. If you like what you bought and it looks fine to you then keep them the way they are.

My personal preference is to let the curtains skim the floor. You can go as high above the window casing as you want.

I'm no design expert but in our house, drapes in more formal areas like living rooms/ dining rooms go to the floor. Curtains in the bedrooms do not. They go either to the sill or a bit lower. Does your husband like it? If both you and your husband think they look good then don't worry about it! Bedrooms aren't usually a high company area!!

LOL!! :o I wasn't really thinking in terms of others seeing it, but whether-or-not it looks simply dumb. This house is so much more "formal" than I am used to.

Mor importantly for me, my brain is trying to process the rest of the house. The windows are the same throughout.....so I am trying to figure this out before I even start looking for the rest of the rooms. (did I mention that I really don't like to go shopping! ;) )
