My dd uses Notgrass for American history, and she feels that WWI got a short shrift. Truth is, she is just interested in WWI and would like suggestions of extra resources to enhance her study.
So, please recommend any movies (documentary or fiction) or non-fiction books you've used for this time period.
Thank you!

All Quiet on the Western Front should be required reading for all students, in my opinion.

My ds and I really enjoyed this brilliant documentary series from the BBC called The First World War. Here's a link to it at Netflix:

Orange is beautiful! I love that there is a place with a small town feel in the middle of the So Cal sprawl. My niece is a senior at Chapman, so I've had a chance to visit the area over the last few years.
We're down the 5 from you in San Diego.
We are doing WW I right now! I have some resources posted on my blog that are geared toward girl interest. Check it out - siggy line. I think your daughter would really enjoy After the Dancing Days, Rilla of Ingleside, and The Yanks are Coming.
I also created a Netflix list for WW I HERE (http://rss.netflix.com/ListRSS?id=P1414219591761913323801686494733296&listID=273141):
Have fun!

We're just doing WWI too - some of the things that have gone over best so far:
World War I by Ruth Tenzer Feldman (non-fiction)
War Horse by Michael Murpurgo (my dd loved this book)
Gay-Neck, Story of Pigeon by Dhan Mukerji
We're also watching a PBS series called "American Diary" which has a lot of episodes from the time of WWI.
Two books we're going to listen to on CD but haven't gotten to yet, but sound really good based on the Amazon reviews (both in set in US during WWI):
A Time of Angels by Karen Hesse
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson

I have really enjoyed the Uncle Eric books on WWI and WWII. It gave me a completely different view of this war and what lead up to it. It really makes you think.

There's a wonderful WWI movie about the Christmas night when the Germans and the French put down their weapons for the night and sang Silent Night to each other. The "truce" lasted a little while--it's a touching and wonderful movie--Joyeux Noel, I believe, is the title.

BOOKS
- The Road From Home (Kherdian)
True story of a Christian Armenian girl surviving the Turkish purge and WWI and whose faith keeps her from despair.
- All Quiet on the Western Front (Remarque)
NOT for the faint of heart -- AND I would read/discuss this one aloud together -- but incredible view of trench warfare of WW1 and the horror of war; the movie was done in the early 1930s and is less intense than the novel
MOVIES (as always, preview first if in doubt!)
- Sergent York
Story of most decorated WW1 US soldier, showing how he becomes a Christian and how he remained a simple man of faith; older B&W film tastefully done so the whole family can watch
- Flambards
PBS series set in the years before, during and just after WW1; a "soap opera" not about the war, but you do see the changes in British class society as a result of the war.
- All Quiet on the Western Front
1930s B&W; tame by today's standards, but I would say for age 13+ due to the tough emotional content -- the destruction of the soul.
- Gallipoli
Story of Aussie soldiers in the trench warfare in Turkey; beautifully done and very moving/sad anti-war statement; for at least 9th grade and up.
And here's a great list of Films of World War 1:
