Do you supplement with lit guides, book reports, written narrations, etc and for what grade levels?
Ds (8) has read through the 4 levels of Sonlight readers and we go over the comprehension questions. We also use the Sonlight read alouds, so there is more discussion there.
Next year we'll be using Core 2, so he will not have SL readers, he's very disappointed that there aren't more levels that do not tie into history.
I'm trying to think through and weigh options.
1. I do have a booklist gathered and already purchased that I could use. Titles include: Charlie and the Chocolate Facotry, From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm, Incident at Hawk's Hill, Owls in the Family, Rabbit Hill, The Kite Fighters, The Secret Seven, The Moffats, Magic or Not?, The Children of Green Knowe, The Great Brain, and Secret Agents Four. He also devours books on his own. Would simply reading these be plenty for one year? Would you require a narration or book project?
2. If I put these on his bookshelf he'd read them anyway. I could then use that "school time" to do a more formal lit study with guides, but at the same time, I don't want him to dread reading, which he would if written work was attached to every book and wonder if that is even necessary in 4th or if what we have been doing is plenty? He writes plenty for other subjects so I'm not looking for a source to increase the writing quantitiy.
3. I've also thought about doing some misc. things like Reading Detective and Editor in Chief on cd-rom. He is typing, but is burnt out of Typing Instructor and I'd like to work on increasing his speed next year in preparation for 5th grade writing assignments. I'm thinking perhaps these two along with continuing the Calvert Spelling cds may be a way to sneak that in.
Is there another company that has reading lists for the year complete with schedules and guides that are non related to history we could consider for 4th up?
He will use Sonlight (history and read alouds) through 6th, then TRISMS if that helps.
IYO, which would be the wisest use of our time?
