I guess I am just not understanding how to implement this with my oldest. She is ok in spelling, but needs help with her syllabication. I choose this curriculum from recommendations here. I think it could be a worth while program but it really looks easy from the beginning and she tends to get bored with some of the activities they ask. Also, how do you know she has mastered it? Do you give an actual spelling test at the end of the week or lesson? Do you give all the starred words for the test or just some of them? Do you add in some of the not starred words. Or am I just missing how it is supposed to work all the way around? I'm off to go and re-read the teacher's manual, but I would love to know how others implement this program.

I hope I'm making sense with my questions.

Basically, I just do what the TM outlines. Before we begin the book, I do the reading and spelling tests, just to see where they are. I have them work through the pages, ususally two a day, for each list. When they have sucessfully completed those, I test them on ten of the starred words, giving a variety of words using the different rules being taught. If they get 9 or 10 correct, we move on to the next list. If they miss more than 1, we talk about what they missed and which rule applies. Then we retest. If they still didn't get it, I would probably do a little more work with them on the rules from that lesson, then test again.

I also have index cards on a ring that I make with each rule and sample words. Those help them study the list and the rules, and they are for them to use in their other work if they forget how to spell a word.
