I need recommendations for co-op debate please. This group will only meet 1 time a month, so most of the work will be done independently. Thank you, Angela

The Art of Argument.
There was a thread recently about debate and someone mentioned contacting Chris Jeub (thank-you!), so maybe search for that thread. VERY helpful- link to his book above.

Here's a re-post of what I put out before...

Depending upon where you live, you may be able to compete with the National Forensics League Teams (http://www.nflonline.org/Main/HomePage) (public/private schools) or with the Catholic Forensics League. (http://www.ncfl.org/) In some areas, homeschoolers can work under the umbrella of another local school. Or, you can form your own co-op team and compete locally as well.

The National Forensics League offers its members (anyone can join), FREE training videos, plus I believe they also have some resources on-line.

For help with getting started in NCFCA, I'd reccomend contacting Chris Jeub (http://www.monumentpublishing.com/authors/chrisjeub.htm). Tell him Lisa Kanak (he SHOULD remember me! -- but if you need to jog his memory, you could mention that I foounded Arkansas Homeschool Debate and founded the Fredericksburg, VA Homeschool Debate team, and served on the original NCFCA board with him...)

To bring a bit of debate into your homeschool world, in addition to Chris Jeub's book and materials, you can get the lectures by Zarefsky from TTC -- there is also a decent book (Strategic Debate) published by the National Textbook Company (by Wood & Goonight) which is a good introductory text for high school students.

Where there is a will, there is a way!

I'm still 3 years away from re-entering the speech and debate world with my family (I took a leave of absence 5 years ago, as it became too much for me to juggle everything). I haven't decided whether we'll go the CFL route or the NCFCA route yet... but we'll be doing SOMETHING!:D

Lisa, thanks for this post. I did contact Chris and I think that he might be able to come through our area and speak at a regional conference :) I am hoping to get a Forensics team going here!

I've used Introduction to Argument and Debateby Christy Shipe for several years. It's a great book for learning how to write and argue a basic case. The book only covers team policy debate. If you are looking for Lincoln-Douglas material, our LD coach used the Red Book and a Red Book instructional book (available from www.trainingminds.org).

I would highly, highly suggest encouraging your students to attend a Communicators for Christ conference if there is one in your area next year. They are usually in Atlanta every year and may well be in North Carolina as well. The CFC conference will give your students a huge leg-up in understanding the world of debate. Debate is tricky for students for two reasons: 1) the new debate theory and terms and 2) the economics, government, and domestic and foreign policy that students must immerse themselves in to debate the resolutions. The CFC conference will really help teach the debate theory and practice as well as introduce the year's resolution.

If you are new to debate, you could also contact your state NCFCA rep (www.NCFCA.org). She should be able to answer questions about activities within your state and help you get started. Though she's probably up to her eyeballs busy right now as the state qualifying tournaments are in full swing.

HTH,
Lisa

Teresa Moon's group... Communicators for Christ has a great program for debate. She sells a good book on the subject too..

Whoops! I didn't see the post on top of mine. Teresa was a neighbor of mine in Napa, and my daughter attended her co-op classes when we lived there.
Actually, I also had the privilege of teaching her son math too. Anyway, she is a very gifted speaker and her debate camps prepare the students, no matter how timid they are to begin with, to handle any debate topic with maturity and a quick wit. Her older son Wendell has won the HSLDA top award many times too. Email her to get more information at tmmoon@gmail.com if you want more information or go to the website at www.communicatorsforchrist.com (http://www.communicatorsforchrist.com)

What about Communicators for Christ (http://www.communicatorsforchrist.com/)? I don't know very much about it, other than the fact that 11 of them are staying at my house for the Masters conference :-)

I recently came across this post and wanted to let you know about a new resource for home-schooled families called Tools For Debate (http://dfwspeechdebate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=96&Itemid=73). 12-week curriculum is available for parents, teachers or club leaders to train new and experienced students to debate. These resources include drills and examples specific to each year's NCFCA and Stoa debate topics.

More information is available at www.dfwspeechdebate.com (http://dfwspeechdebate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=96&Itemid=73)
