View Full Version : Do you ever just used Singapore Math's Intensive Practice workbks?

Did you find it as effective as using the textbook/workbook combo? Dd9 hates doing her SM (standards). She moans and groans on doing the textbook and then workbook sequence. Can I just have her do the workbook after going through the lessons on the textbook orally? My other dd does not have any problem with this and I don't understand dd9's attitude.
I'm thinking of getting the Extra Practice Standards and Intensive Workbooks US Ed for dd in place of the text/workbk.
What do you think? Would it still offer the same benefits?
Thanks so much.

I love the IP books. We use those as our main book. I will go back and get ideas or work problems from the other books, but the IP and extra practice books are great. I tend to cycle through the books based on what my dd's needs are not on what the proper sequence is. Sometimes, she devours the IP problems, sometimes she needs more practice, and sometimes she needs a break to work easier problems.

We're just using the Intensive Practice for 1A. My daughter went through about half of Alpha in MUS, then it started not working. We took a break from the book and just worked on math facts, first with worksheets, then, after we found it, the flashmaster. So, she's had most of the math before, it's just to get new ideas and more review of math facts. We do Intensive Practice and Flashmaster now.
When we get to 1B, I'll do both when we need to, just Intensive Practice for things she gets pretty easily.

We started using just the extra practice w/o the textbook, and the IP. When my dd started with 1A, this was great, b/c she did not need much explanation of the concepts, other than what the EP workbooks gave. However, she quickly got bored of the EP workbook. I think it felt like busy work for her.
Now, I'm using the textbook, with both of my dds using a lapboard/whiteboard and dry erase markers to work out the text problems if need be. Then, I turn them loose on the IP. The IP's are amazing. There are a few initial problems on each topic that are somewhat similar to the workbooks, but then, the problems are taken to the next level, and then the next level, and then the next level. :tongue_smilie: They really stretch the student's way of thinking.
This latter system is working nicely for us -- we seem to have hit our stride and I don't see a need to use the regular workbooks for now. But, I think each child is different. Some need more drill, some don't. I think if your daughter is not liking the regular workbook, by all means, try the Intensive Practice. They are quite challenging, and fun!

I use the textbook to teach the lesson, as I figure that's the classroom part. I often work the initial examples on a chalk or whiteboard, and then the exercises in the book I have them do on a chalk or whiteboard with me sitting with them, as they would if those were the problems done in a classroom. I think I tried having them copy them onto paper in 2nd grade, but there was horrible whining and complaining, which went away and never returned when we switched to the chalk or whiteboard. I never write in the textbook. I have one per level that lasts for 3 kids.
Then they do the workbook independently. I know I've heard you can use the IP books instead of the regular workbook, but I'm not sure any of that replaces the textbook that actually teaches the concepts?

One last question...I'm assuming that you would get the equivalent level on the IP and Extra workbks. I was thinking of having dd9 worked back on 4 and go to 5. I have the Extra Practice standards and I've noticed that there is more topics covered on the standards version compared to the US.
Thank you very much. I love the suggestions and is relieved to find out that these workbooks would work as well as the text/student combo. I don't think I can take anymore of my dd's groaning...it's enough to drive me to jump overboard a ship if I am on a ship with her.
