View Full Version : Just what should I include?

On the Art site?

I've got these sections: About Me, A FAQ section (mainly for what I use, why I do it, etc), a Pricing/Shipping Policy Section, How to Contact Me, and sections for each type of art I do.

Since what I do is so custom, how should I list my prices? That is, should I just say something like "Custom pieces start at $XXX --depending on size, time, number of subjects in each piece" or what?

I am, under the pricing/shipping section, including the fact that I use an outside source to print the items and that the cost of the custom order includes this. I am also including what it is you can order (do you want it printed on just photo paper, on matte board, on canvas?) and the sizes these can be ordered in.

What else do I need?

Do you have a "rate" as far as time goes? Hourly, daily, what-have-you.

That's what I am trying to figure out. I've been told that just one of my pieces (actually several, but only one I could legitimately sell) can go **easily** for $350.00 or more. **HOW** do I convey that to someone who might be considering me as opposed to someone more professional (Like say Boris Vallejo or another artist)? How do I convey that my prices really are "cheap" while the quality is not?

It depends on the piece--I mean, the Morticia one took me several days to do. But the Lon Chaney only a couple of hours. The difference is in the amount of work. Chaney's was more "button pushing" as opposed to Morticia's being all freehand and very little use of extra tools. Likewise, the image of my brother was the same as Morticia's but took a few days less than hers to do, but turned out the same quality.

Due to the shipping times--I'd have to quote them a 2 (possibly more) week turnaround anyway--but I wouldn't "charge" them for 2 weeks worth of work, kwim?

It does depend on the number of people in the picture and what you want done to it. If you want 3 people in a picture done like my brother's image, that's going to take me at least a week to do, then tack on a week for shipping to me, then another week for shipping to you. But you wouldn't be "charged" a fee (per se) for the 2 week shipping time, you'd be charged actual shipping, yes... but you'd only be charged a fee for how long it would take me to do it.

make sense?

I am not sure what your art site is about. It seems that you are setting up shop so to speak for your art work?
Anyway...I used to work at a gallery and my boss often gave advice to aspiring artists about selling their art work.
Are you doing commisions? Where are you located? Have you made posters or prints of your work??
Well if you are interested in the web site of the place I worked at it is: www.everythingart.com (http://www.everythingart.com)
Diane DeCillis is the owner. She is always willing to look at art work and give advice.
(My name is Caroline.)

If you go to my blog and see what I've done--it's basically all custom pieces. I don't do anything mass produced. It's all custom drawn/photo manipulated via different art programs. So basically it is commissions. I have two basic prints already done but those were done just to see how the company I would be using for printing, would turn them out.

I will email her and see what she says. I've had my work looked at by several area artists and that was the minimum they told me to charge.

How about production time? Will you be giving individual quotes that will include that information? Maybe a bit on your site will help prospective buyers plan for gift giving and such.

Yes I have production time listed under the Ordering Information part. I've stated that the more people/items involved, the longer it will take--giving the example that if I have 3 people, that alone would take at least a week to do, then you have a good two week turnaround for shipping time.
